i threw this one into my common app essay
"...my new school had as many asians as did the ballroom at the soul train music awards..." my friend thought it was funny but might be a turnoff for the adcom

I’ll give you my perspective. I don’t even understand it. (admittedly, there aren’t that many Asians in my school) And it sounds racist. What if one of the Adcoms is a conservative Asian. Overall, i don’t think it is a good idea.

It’s not appropriate. If you’re Asian, you’ve got (relative) license to make Asian jokes, but don’t drag anyone else into it. If you want to make that particular joke, change it to something Asians are known for not doing, not for something another ethnicity is…

Honestly, you have to be cleverer than that if you’re going to make a racially-based joke. Otherwise, it’s going to come across as insensitive and like you’re just going for a shock laugh.

I think you would definitely change it. Even if you didn’t mean to be offensive, the person reading it might get offended.

People here are probably right only in that the adcom might be ridiculously PC. I think it is perfectly fine. The Soul Train Music Awards are a real thing. Clearly the number of Asians associated with something like that is about zero. So? What’s the big deal? But just to be practical, since you cannot know what the adcoms think and universities are usually ultra-PC, the joke isn’t worth it.

maybe if i said as many asians as does a waffle house at 2 in the morning

usually ppl are less sensitive to jokes about white ppl, but the adcom would have to be from the south to get that one…

I get both your jokes, but I can definitely see that going over 90% of the population’s head. It’s not even that great of a joke. Don’t risk it.

It seems to me it is a question of where you are going with that in the rest of your essay. Just know when dealing with PC issues you are on a slippery slope.

You have a small pen is

Lmao ^^^, ***…

Are you asian?
