Is This Justice?

I'm so hurt that I got rejected:

My stats are 3.83 gpa and 25 ACT

However, I had a major gastrointestinal illness that caused me to undergo over 35 procedures and surgeries. I spent so much time at the doctors, hospital, testing. Since my illness affected me, I finished my high school 50% by physically attending high school and 50% through independent study programs.

My illness affected my ability in testing. My freshmen grades were bad because of my health, otherwise I did well.

My health didn't allow me to take too many AP courses. However, I did try my best.

However, I feel my extracurriculars were great.

Attended Northwestern University CTD summer program. Earned A grade in Hons. Constitutional Law Course. Evanston, IL.

My recs. were great. My teachers showed them to me, and they all said best student encountered in career, and also gave detailed examples as to why I should be accepted.

What went wrong? Any suggestions/feedback? Thanks!

i think it’s the ACT.

Even despite the health issue?

yea even with the health issue, it was the act

Health issues can explain lower GPAs, but they don’t really justify a low score on a standardized test where studying isn’t necessary?

Well, my stomach illness made it hard for me to sit through the test because of the pain and other symptoms.

i dunno man, those health issues are always hard to prove. I mean I feel your pain, and I’m sure it was really hard for you to sit down for 4 hrs with a stomach illness, but 25 is just too low. If you’d gotten a 27, I think you would’ve gotten in.

Maybe the admissions office was concerned that, due to the rigor of Emory and the way that your illness has affected your high school career (with the testing and the rigor of your courses), that you might end up getting in only to have to drop out? Like if you were missing classes and so forth, you’d only end up hurting yourself later on?

I don’t know, you’re so entirely brave and accomplished! Where ever you go, you’re going to kick so much ass, it’s not even funny!

well ur health issue hasnt really affected ur gpa, so they prob thought that you had no problem when taking a 3 hr test

if you really want to find out, i think you can actually call and ask them.

Thanks for your post betterday. I intend on trying to contact my state admission counselor on Monday. The operators at Emory told me that I couldn’t talk to them earlier because they were traveling. I do intend on calling. Thanks.

hey i feel for ya man…and i def dont wanna sound like a jerk…but how is it not “justice”… did you consider your self overqualified?? Not that i dont think your a respecatable candidate..but a 25 act is just a big red flag…have you considered appealing? Maybe explaining to them better??

Thanks for your post. I didn’t mean to sound conceited by using the term “Justice”. I don’t feel that I’m overqualified for Emory. Thanks for your suggestion of appealing. I will contact Emory on Monday and hopefully talk to my state counselor.

Unfortunately, milan, there are very many qulaified students who don’t get accepted to their desired schools. It is not always clear why. While it is certainly reasonable to call the admissions office and inquire further, it may or may not do you much good. Perhaps you are better off putting your energies into pursuing other schools. It is certainly disappointing to be rejected, especially if that has not been something you have had much experience with (and with your accomplishments you look like you have had many successes), but it is one of those life lessons. Good luck.

Doesn’t really matter what we think or say. The decision was totall from Emory. nothing else matters. I do think your ACT probably hurt you. It’s out of line with your academic record. Maybe they thought your high school took it easier on you because of your illness. Hard for them to discern the real you. The GPA/courses or your standardized tests.

Standarized tests can be the equalizer among so many kids from so many different high schools.
