my school is offering membership to the 'National Society of Collegiate Scholars', which i've never heard of before, to kids with above a 3.4 GPA. i figure membership could be something extra to have on my resume, but there's a fee to join. should i even bother? or is this a complete waste of money...

Is the NSCS on your campus active? At some places, they're very active - doing community service projects, putting together recognition ceremonies for students and faculty, funding various projects on campus, etc - being a member, and more importantly an officer in such an organization can be good... But on the other hand at other schools, it's just a line on the resume, and the group is non-existent. Very much the same way for other honors like Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, Order of Omega and any of the honoraries for specific majors (ie Beta Beta Beta for Biology or Alpha Kappa Delta for Sociology).

I'm part of it at my college, and while it doesn't take up much of my time, the club does organize several projects a semester. For instance, there are at least a handful of trips to the closest children's hospital so you can hang out with the kids. We just got a hypnotist to come to our school. We also do mentoring and tutoring at a local high school. There are a few other things I'm forgetting, but you get the idea. If you consciously make an effort, it's not just a resume builder!

here it is active but i wish i hadn't joined. lots of emails.

pbk or nothing imo
