a little help?

bump again

Do not worry I will give you some feedback! I graduated from one of the service academies, have lived in Rhode Island (New England connection) and served as a naval officer for 12 years. I have traveled / lived in many parts of the country and worked with fellow officers who encompassed many schools you are considering. So in essence, I have just enough info' to be dangerous! Here are my thoughts.

Seasons - I will cut right to the chase. If you want seasons, New England is the way to go. I will bump NY into that region for now. Cornell and Colgate are outstanding schools with pristine settings. So if you want seasons, I would take out: Miami, FSU and UF.

Size - Michigan is a huge school and it is very easy to get lost amongst a sea of peers. Great school, but you will definitely be a number. BC is a top school along with Boston University. Some people love the big city others do not.

Campus - Have you considered schools such as Washington and Lee, Grove City, Lehigh and Bucknell? All are terrific schools with entrance exam scores of your caliber. Washington and Lee is located in central VA and the others are in PA. Each has a serene campus and a quality nameplate.

Pre-Law: Do not get too wrapped up in committing to a major early. Many people hem-haw back and forth. Wherever you decide, keep an open mind. You will have new experiences both socially and academically. A good friend from the academy is an attorney. He was also a naval officer with a BS in Marine Transportation (Global Logistics). He smoked the LSAT and graduated from the University of Florida. Never mentioned anything about this career path a decade ago! Remember, anybody can take the LSAT. Nothing derogatory; however, major in something you enjoy. I cannot stress that enough. Sometimes people pursue a degree they think will impress those around them, namely the parents. Pursue what you want and if you are genuine towards English, do not major in Aeronautical Engineering to name drop when you see your friends over the Holidays! Trust me on this one.

My best friend since the age of 4 graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a degree in Chemical Engineering; then told his parents on graduation day he wanted to be a golf pro. Thirteen years later he holds his PGA card and installs high-tech computer systems for golf courses around the country! (By the way, his parents loved that surprise!) A little side-tracked, but a good story.

Probably, maybe and no way - These are categories which will reflect the chances in "your mind". I will come back to that later. I applied to around 9 schools while in my senior year. Roughly 3 were 'long shots', 3 fell into the confident category and the remainder was "fall back" schools. I was turned away at a "confident" category school and accepted at a "huge" long shot school. Remember, you know where you stand, but never sell yourself short. Conversely, never get too confident either. Most of the time it comes down to who reads your application and what catches and holds their attention. Grades, SAT / ACT, extra-curricular activities...who knows.

In closing, you will reach a burnout point with college applications. Some essays / personal statements can be modified and others will start from scratch. Do not half-ass an application, because you can rest assured that somewhere in the nation another person is burning the candle at both ends to ensure perfection. Quality over quantity.

As an admissions representative for the United States Merchant Marine Academy (NY), I usually try and answer questions related to service academies for unsure parents or applicants. However, I stumbled across your credentials and wanted to give my two cents! Best of luck.

wow...thanks a bunch for all of that insight

bummmmpppp
