ABOUT ME
I am a very international student--I was born in France and have lived in Paris, London, New York, Connecticut, and Athens.

My list so far is:

REACH
Colby (top choice–applying ED)
Columbia

TARGET
NYU
Northeastern (not sure if I want to apply here)
Lafayette

SAFETY
Franklin & Marshall (not sure if safety or target)
BU (not sure if safety or target)
Dickinson

does this seem realistic?
if you want me to chance you back, leave a link!

I am not knowledgeable about most of these schools but can assure you that your designations for Columbia, NYU, and BU are probably correct. Good luck, nonetheless :)

COLBY IS NOT A REACH! It can be your top school but it is a match. It’s probably on the lower end of matches too. I think you most likely have it. Your matches are right except that Northeastern is bordering a safety.

updated list: (moved Colby, added Skidmore to safeties)

REACH
Columbia

TARGET
NYU
Northeastern (not sure if I want to apply here)
Lafayette
Colby (top choice–applying ED)

SAFETY
Franklin & Marshall
BU
Dickinson
Skidmore

do my safeties seem like realistic options or should some of them be matches?

To be honest I think you would still get in to Colby if you applied RD. That way you don’t have commit to attending until you see the outcomes of your other college applications.

yeah I know but I’d rather apply early so that I*know in December where I’m going (: If I get into Colby as well as other schools RD, I’d end up going to Colby anyway so might as well get it over with earlier! (:

Lafayette is probably closer to a safety as well.

Really? seemed more like a match, but I’m not really sure…obviously my GC will be able to help me with that when school starts, I just want to have a preliminary list ready.
Any other opinions? I revised my list slightly (and by that I mean added a few colleges I have no chance at ^^)

REACH
Barnard
Yale

TARGET
NYU
Lafayette
Colby (top choice–applying ED)

SAFETY
Franklin & Marshall
BU
Dickinson
Skidmore

I think Lafayette is probably a match. GPA is very close to mean of accepted students. SAT R&W are above the 75%, but SAT M is below the 25%.

Thanks guys!
Any other opinions?

bump!
any opinions on the safety schools? Are they actual safeties or more target-ranged?
also recommendations for other schools are much appreciated :D

Lafayette would still be on the lower ends of a target for you. And your safeties are safeties. I find your list to be on the “safe side”. You could definitely give a couple higher end schools a shot like Colgate, Bucknell, Bates, and Washington and Lee. If you can raise your UW GPA to around a 3.8 UW or higher you could even try schools like Williams and Swarthmore as reaches given your generally strong SAT

I’m entering my senior year of high school, so raising my UW GPA by that much might be a bit hard (esp. since I’m applying ED to my favorite school) but I’ll take a look at those other schools you mentioned (:

I am not sure Colby is a “reach”.

On the other hand, I am not sure Franklin & Marshall is a safety.

Nor is it certain that BU is a safety.

Those two are not that easy to get into, especially BU, because it is so popular.

I would apply to some more LAC’s, given your good verbal and writing SAT scores

However, they are not that easy to get into.

I would look at the US News list of LACs, and apply in the range of #10 through #30.

Based upon my son’s experience, who had better stats than yours, I don’t think you will get into numbers 1-10.

yeah BU and Franklin and Marshall are the two safeties I wasn’t sure about.
Thanks for your advice, I’ll look at schools in that range!

Holy Cross and Bucknell are 2 good schools. HC has nice campus not far from Boston.

Academics aside, I feel like your ECs and international-ness put you at a bit of an edge compared to others with similar stats, since schools like Colby put an emphasis on their diverse, international campus.
Your safeties seem about right, although BU might be more of a match.
Do you have a particular type of school in mind, though? Because you have everything from small LACs like Colby to huge universities like NYU on your list.

If you like Colby you could check out the other two Maine schools, Bowdoin and Bates. Bowdoin is a bit more selective than Colby, but would probably be more of a low reach for you.

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1376809-chance-me-lacs.html

You should definitely go for Colby, but I’m not sure if your international-ness is enough of a hook for you to look towards the Ivies. Your scores and grades are decent but to me, it seems like you’re lacking a little bit in terms of EC passion (2 hours a week isn’t really a lot of time compared to the crazy hours put in by other applicants). If you can find a way to really make your EC’s stand out through your essay, then maybe you can look towards your reaches!
