Is this ok?

There's a festival I'd really like to try out for, but they accept only DVD auditions and my webcam gave out the other day and I can't make one. People at my school use their computers 24/7 so I haven't been able to find someone willing to part with theirs for a day (it takes me a long time to make a recording I'm happy with). I've tried everything to find a camcorder or something, but I've had no luck.

I emailed the festival and they said that cannot accept a CD audition. Do you think that I should send one and include a note explaining the situation, or just bag the audition? I did a lot of work in preparation for the audition, so I don't want it to go to waste, but I also know already that they probably won't accept my recording in this form... What do you think?

No recording resources within UChicago? Roosevelt? Other area schools? A local trade/tech school? No DVD from a prior submission (ok, a long shot, given it's got to be matching or appropriate rep.)

You can send the CD, but I advise you investigate alternatives. If you send the CD, include the steps you've taken to try and assemble a DVD, and do include your resume. The attempt may fall on deaf ears, but with your range of prior experiences, they may bend given your accomplishments.

I would not recommend this to the typical applicant, but your "resume" assembled from your prior posts speaks to your ability.

Good luck.

There are students that do video at DD's school. You just pay them a reasonable amount, and it really is cheap. They are actually scheduled through the music department. There is also one doing the student written musical for free as a gift to the team with his own equipment. I do not think that the festival will buy that you cannot get a DVD recorded at a university. Have you put a request out on any of the networks at school?

I've asked around the music dept and other students and I can't find anyone who's willing to give up their computer for a day or has access to a camcorder. The deadline's on Saturday and I have the whole thing recorded on CD. I'm a perfectionist and I know that if I try to redo the whole thing it'll take me a day at least and, with no access to video equipment, I don't see how that's going to be possible...

would anyone be willing to read the letter i wrote to the festival if i PM-ed it to you?

Possibility #1 - Did you check out NSIT: Audio Visual Equipment Lending & Rental
If you can get a faculty or staff member to sign it out for you, you could get what you need for free, otherwise you could rent it yourself.

Possibility #2 - I can understand that your friends would not be able to loan you their computer for 24 hours, but did you try asking people to loan you just their webcam? Maybe someone would be more willing to do this.

problem solved - i know the bass teacher and i called him up, explained the situation, and he said that it isn't ideal to not have a DVD, but a CD will be ok.

thanks for the replies though, all!

In certain instances, you can try "stretching the envelope". It doesn't always work, and don't take advantage of it.

But it does illustrate now your network or prior experiences can help. You need to be astute enough to realize how and when to use these resources.

Ok, they accepted it!

Now I just have wait for my results.
