Is this person my competition?

So I recently found out that someone at my school is also applying to NYU next fall. Not many people from my school apply, and I think only about 2 people have gone in the last 10 years. Both of us plan on applying ED1.

So this other person has a 32 ACT, but I only have a 30 (superscored it would be a 32). Their GPA is lower than mine and I have taken a more rigorous high school courseload. I am involved in a lot more activities and have acquired numerous national writing awards-they haven't.

So my main question is does NYU only accept a certain number of students from each school? I know this sounds crazy, but is this other person possibly jeopardizing my spot, since they may only accept a few of us from the same school?

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it. Yes, I’m sure every school has a limit to the amount of students it is willing to accept from each school. NYU isn’t going to say it has to accept one or the other… it is going to look at both of your applications and evaluate them as they would any other applicant.

I wouldn’t worry about it.

Definitely not a big deal at all, but I can see where you’re coming from, having had a similar situation. All the students at my school opt for local state colleges so I was panicking when I found out another student was also applying to NYU (his GPA and class rank were WAY better than mine but I had a 31 ACT whereas he had a 29). I got in, he got rejected… but if I recall correctly, he applied to Tisch (which i feel is way competitive). So I guess it depends which school you guys apply to.

Don’t, like, try to sabotage him/her (I may or may not have considered to do such i’m embarrassed to say) or anything but just focus on ways to make yourself stand out, especially if you both come from a background that isn’t as widely represented at NYU. But definitely not something to get worked up over. Try to make yourself competitive over ANY other student.

5 People from my school got into NYU. 2 to LSP 1 to Stern and 2 to CAS, so don’t worry about it.

I don’t see why they would be your competition. NYU does look at the rigor of your high school, but I very much doubt they keep track of how many people they accept from every high school and I doubt they have some cap for each high school.
