I’m going to be a college student next year and need to decide where to go. I got admitted to the college but not the business school and would like to eventually transfer. I know you need a 3.5, 30 credit hours and micro/math but I think I can obtain this. I have the Econ and math accomplishments done and would basically just need to get a 3.5 gpa. Is it worth going here over another school where I got directly admitted into business (Iowa). I’m a good student (3.5/4 GPA) that took tons of AP’s and Honors classes but just had a low ACT (26). Any advice?
I’m a Farmer alum, and I do believe I received a very good education. Farmer continues to get more competitive each year for direct admission. Based upon last year’s stats, the average student accepted directly into Farmer had a 3.9 GPA and a 29 ACT - so don’t lose sleep over it - you’re still a good student and I applaud your accomplishments. I honestly don’t think I would have received direct admission if I applied to Farmer this year. While the Tippie (Iowa) business school is consistently rated below Farmer, it is not dramatically lower in rankings and still a well-regarded program. Here is my unscientific opinion. If you are looking to stay in the Midwest AND Iowa is considerably cheaper, go to Iowa. Both programs have strong reputations in the Midwest and both will put you in the running for a good job. Farmer seems to have more mindshare vs Tippie in other parts of the country - how much more mindshare is debatable, however. If Miami is not considerably higher in price than Iowa AND you are truly willing to make the social sacrifices that may be required to ensure you get the 3.5, I’d choose Farmer. The caliber of students, facilities, education itself, resources, and job placement for Farmer are excellent (but of course I’m biased…) I do want to stress that getting a 3.5 in college is definitely harder than getting a 3.5 in high school, and the temptation to socialize in college is very strong. Ask yourself honestly if you are willing to forego the party down the street that all your friends are at - to study instead. You may need to periodically make these sacrifices your first year at Miami to ensure you get the 3.5. At either school, you’re going to receive a good education and have a great college experience. Best of luck with your decision!
