I am a junior in HS and interested in going to NYU-Stern. However, I am not sure if I will get in if I apply to Stern. Is it possible to apply to NYU and then apply for Stern later on(like after the 1st or 2nd year)? Also, say if I apply to Stern and don't get in, would they still consider me for NYU?

~~~~no~~~~
It is possible to do an internal transfer to Stern from another NYU college but very few are accepted. Your chances are likely to be less than if you had applied to Stern in the first place.
If your application to any NYU college is rejected, you are rejected - period. It is possible that you could be waitlisted or referred to the General Studies Program, in which case you will "rejoin" the college you initially applied to after 2 years. However, GSP referrals for Stern applicants are rare, since they are primarily intended for those studying liberal arts. You may also reapply after one year either as a freshman or a transfer, depending on your academic status.
NYU's "official" word is that if you apply and are rejected to one school, you would be rejected from any other school within the University that you applied for. Likewise, if you were to apply and be accepted, then you would have been accepted to any school within NYU had you applied for a different one. (ex. if you get into Stern, it means that you would have gotten into Tisch if you'd applied there instead)
Which is obviously BS.
what a bunch of BS.... lol. i know a bunch of ppl at my school who have wayyyy better credentials than me who got rejected from NYU cuz they applied to stern, whereas i applied at CAS and got in.
Mm, I don't know if the gap is really that huge. The only definite criteria is that Stern wants higher SAT Math scores. Besides that, I've no authority to say.
Also, I have met a couple people to do internal transfers from CAS into Stern. It's not impossible. Plus, if you're sure you can hack it at CAS and get good grades to transfer to Stern, you get to bypass the extra writing requirement...which would just be nice.
I've never seen that to be "the official word". In fact, I never heard that from anyone from the time I first visited NYU which was more than two years ago, and I've just finished freshman year. Obviously, there are different requirements for the different NYU colleges. I can't imagine anyone who is officially involved with NYU admissions ever making that statement. What they DO say, though, is that if you don't get admitted to the college to which you apply, you are not referred to another college. You can apply to one and one only. Internal transfers happen but they are rare, especially to Stern or Tisch. They will happen only when space allows and there is no guarantee that you'll get one. That's why they recommend that you apply to the college you really want right from the beginning.
