Is this program worth it?

Hello foruminians! I discovered s new opportunity in my schooling. My school district offers a Program called MBIT its a technical school which you attend for half the day and then you go to your designated high school and take your core classes (English,Science,History and Math) my dilemma is I don't know if the programs are worth taking. They have one program which I'm interested is called Health Sciences, you basically take anatomy classes and they teach you both clinical skills and medical terminology etc.

I am a URM (Puerto Rican) and wish to become a doctor of some sorts preferably (radiology, ophthalmology) I don't know what is more important to colleges the classes you took or the experience, i doubt i could take more than 2 or 3 AP classes if i decide to take the program and will try to take as many honors classes as i can, but do you guys think its worth it. I would also have the opportunity to "shadow" doctors while earning a small wage. If you had this chance would you take it. I know that medical schools don't care that much about high school, but would they rather have a kid that spent 3 years in and out of hospitals and clinics and has experience in clinics or the kid who took a ton of AP classes in high school. Thank you all and do you think i would be at a disadvantage to be admitted to a normal college like Penn State or Temple? Thanks! Sorry for grammar (ESL)

You have very high aspirations. For a student of your caliber, I’d recommend you to NOT do the program. Take as many APs as you can, and demonstrate your interest in the sciences. Work hard.

Programs like those are usually meant for students who intend to take a job straight out of high school (hence the highly specialized training). Since you plan to go to college and eventually become a doctor, this is not the program for you.

Good luck!

I have one question the program is described to apply advance anatomy and physiology and is intended for college-bound students interested in the health field. Should i take this as a grain of salt or deeply consider it? I know a dentist and a teacher/llab scientist personally and will ask them for their opinions , nonetheless thank you and may the answers be ever in your favor.

It’s not a good idea if you’d be able to take more AP/advanced classes without it. I go to a high school that only offers a couple of AP classes, so it would be possible for someone to take all the AP classes they offered and still complete a trade school program. In that case it would have been fine for college admissions, but colleges won’t like it if your schedule is less challenging than it could have been given your school. And I’m talking about undergraduate admissions…I don’t think medical schools care either way.

We have a program somewhat like that that is a vo-tech training for half the day for highschoolers. It has comp sci, welding, construction, cooking, megatronics, and health care. In our school mostly the druggies and people that dislike school and do poorly take it. I’m not sure how it looks to colleges and I think it gets you an associate degree I believe. Most people honors/ap don’t take it. It limits the. Lasses you can take and the students involved are held in low regards by other students. It is called eastern Westmoreland Career and tech center basically trade school.

I noticed that too, alot of the “slow ones” go there, but they take like the landscape and automobile programs. The smart kids normally do the dentistry and health ones. The 3 smartest kids are doing the health science, but idk if its still worth it

Thank you all for the wonderful answers! I have finally decided that I will NOT take the health science pathway and i will attend a normal high school, this decision was based on the fact that i want to experience high school and take a bunch of fun classes. Im looking forward to taking AP Euro next year and getting ahead on math so i can take Calculus by Senior Year! Thank You ALL!
