Is this really true ???

hahhaahhaahhahaha … loool … so i mean it may be like he didn’t have a better candidate from Taiwan except him … u know like none of them would have been a IXO champ … or an Inventor or something like that … were u able to find out any stats about him ??

in fact, 5 other people in taiwan were accepted.
Here is his blog about his acceptance, please feel free to check it out:

yeah i read … but still i mean … not clear with the idea …" HOW " ?? and even " WHY " ??..

@JainAman14 This is primarily speculation, but after viewing some past threads and such started by MIT Indian applicants, and the international statistics, there are MANY Indian international applicants each year, much more so than applicants from other countries. This may be why medals may be so important to Indians, since so many people are competing for spots in the single digits.

yeah completely agreed to your point … but since the admissions says that they doesn’t have a quota for any particular country that means they can increase the no. of applicants if they like to … and the applicants are compared in a single round of decision making so i mean i may not be better than someone from my own country by not having a medal but i my be better from some other applicant from some other country ?? and i mean not having a medal is not the only thing right ?? … like what are r u r suggestions that if someone doesn’t have the chance or what you say the opportunity for such a trial … dos even then the appearance of a medal on his/her app considered a “necessity” ??

@JainAman: Don’t worry man. I’m also a participant of International Physics Olympiad this year in Thailand. I personally happened to know all 5 participants from India( 1 girl and 4 boys).All of them won medals this year( 2 Gold and 2 silver and 1 bronze if I’m not wrong).But, according to them, all of them are studying in IIT. So, I think most of the medalist from India study in IIT. It is true that few of them usually apply MIT. Last year also, I was participant of IPhO in Croatia. That year one Indian girl (Akanksha Sarda) won a gold medal, and she is now in MIT. But, the other 4 who also won medal are now studying in IIT(one is studying in NIT Trichi(he told me that he was AIEEE topper of that year)). So, I think you need not worry about the others winning medals in Olympiad. Believe in yourself, you’re going to get what you deserve. If you are really passionate about something then that will surely help you. It will surely help you if you won a medal in Olympiads, but it won’t hurt if you did’t.
Good Luck!

Thanks for that mate it really helped me to console myself up … as for the second last line … i dun think i can win the medal now … cuz i do not have the resources that can allow me to prepare for that … they apply to IIT that’s true but they apply to MIT and this fact cannot be neglected … mostly 5 of them apply from all fields like IChO, IPhO IAO IMO but then only 5 are taken from India … and its only IPhO what you were talking about … i am passionate yes … very much and my sustenance depends on the passion … you applyin this year ??

there are more than 5 olympiads you mentioned… and india participates in nearly all

there is no officail team only for geography and Environmental project.

India participates in all others officially

@kdines: Ure post is quite true. Are u Indian & applying to MIT for fall 2012?

ummm compact … i just gave an example dude … please dun take it on heart !!!

@USApplicant: I’m a medallist of IPO, but not an Indian. And yes I have applied to MIT this year.

@kdines: Firstly, congrats dude.
Secondly, ure from which country?
Thirdly, u know any Indian IXO medallist whose applying to MIT or not applying?
Lastly, u have any idea about the sat scores of previous indian medallists who got selected?
Sorry for so many questions. But it seems you know a lot of these people, so plz enlighten us.

@kdines Enlighten me about South Korea as well, if you know anything about them. I’m a south korean applicant. :)

I don’t understand this obsession with medals. Previous posts have all but explained the situation to you. I mean, clearly you’re allowed to have this discussion here; I just don’t see the point.

@mrwongburger … umm dude just try to check out the link posted above about the admissions from South Korea … i hope it will provide you with just the right info you might need …

@nocturnalduck … its umm … a bit of a long story … i… i’ll share it with you over the talk … !!

@USApplicant: Dude, I don’t know about other Olympiad participant, but NONE of the IPO participant of this year are applying to MIT this year as freshmen. And about the participant of last year who got into MIT last, I don’t think she submitted her SAT scores as MIT accepts TOEFL instead of SAT for international students.
@mrwongburger: All 5 participant had won Gold, I know two of them are studying in SNU. I don’t about rest 3.

Completely agreed with nocturnalduck. I don’t see the point of discussing about the medals in Olympiad. Only a medal does decide whether you are going to get MIT or not. They want a complete package of you. I always say “Believe in yourself!”

@kdines … thanks for the info about the olympiads man … really helped all of us a lot … and really we do believe in ourselves … its only the chances that we dun believe in … i m not talking about others but your example that i might share that having the Medal elates the confidence level very much … and it is this lack of confidence that is shaking the earth beneath us every now and then … as for the data you provided is extremely accurate so hats off to that too … MIT do wants the complete package and this is what we were trying to figure out,i.e. the contents of it … but now i realize that it needs to see the complete package of “YOU” and not anyone else …

@JainAman14: Can you stop worrying? You already applied and there’s nothing you can do but wait. If you don’t get in, it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough - it just means that MIT has a quota for international students and can’t accept everyone. It doesn’t matter what standards they are evaluating you by. Just know that whatever decision they make is for the best. So please stop posting the same thing over and over again on CC and expecting people to reassure you every time. The future isn’t in your hands anymore. Just be ready to accept whatever decision you get and move on. If everyone who applied to MIT worries as much as you do, we would have hundreds of thousands of posts.

And I know MIT isn’t too bit in the humanities, but could you at least learn to capitalize and punctuate?

^ I agree with iceui2.
