Is this really what duke is planning to do this year?!

so, i have recently been admitted to duke off their waitlist this year. I had submitted my deposit to university of michigan, however I feel like duke is the better choice. I was not offered any financial aid to either places, so I would just like a few opinions on each school and what you guys think would be the better choice.

thankss

michigan is a great school. however, duke is a lot smaller and the clear better decision in my opinion if you are paying full price for both. duke is much more selective, in a warmer climate, and will set you up better for jobs regardless of your major. if you had gotten into both in the first place would this even have been a decision?

jbonee-
What do you think you will be studying?
Are in instate for UM?
Is money a significant concern?

I am an oos for Michigan. That means that the cost would
be about 41000 for much and 48000 for duke. With that information and the fact that I will most definately major in engineering what do you think? Thank you so much!

This one is tough. Our son narrowed his choice to the same 2 engin programs. He chose Duke and is very glad he did. But this is such an individual thing. Have you visited both campuses? They are very different places.

(I am a U of M alum, so I also have great fondness and respect for that school)

i don't see how this is even a question (from what you've told us)... although umich is a great school, especially in engineering, i think that duke is significantly better... i've heard of people turn down full rides to umich for duke... i could see how it could be a tough choice if u were instate...

I am instate and about as big of a Michigan fan as you can be but I'M GOING TO DUKE!!!

Agree with others. This was a pretty easy decision for me for Duke engineering over Michigan. I grew up a Michigan fan as my dad, uncle, and older sister all went there. I visited many many times, went to lots of football games, and really love UMich, but, to me, the individual attention and the resources Duke gives its students outweigh Michigan students by a tremendous amount. Better for job placement, grad school placement, research opportunities, etc. And I thought I'd be challenged more outside the engineering curriculum. I even received a $10,000/yr scholarship to UMich (although admittedly I also got some fin aid from Duke). I'd only choose Umich personally if you were interested in an engineering major that Duke doesn't offer (e.g. aeronautical). Michigan's engineering school is much larger so they have a lot more departments. I also got into IL engineering (in-state) and chose Duke over that as well. I probably would have chosen Michigan over Columbia (and maybe even Penn) if I didn't get into Duke, but I'm a sports fanatic so that was a key tipping point for me. But Duke basketball games are even better than Michigan football games - and I've been to many UMich football games as well as Duke b-ball. It seems like the 7k more a year for Duke would be well worth it...Ann Arbor is a nicer city than Durham though....but a lot colder too!

Edit: Just saw that you're interested in BME - then it's NO COMPARISON in my opinion. Duke, definitely.

Yeah, agree w/ bluedog, but I still think Mich-Ohio St. > Duke-UNC...come to Duke though, at least you'll have a respectable basketball team to root for!

go to duke, you'll be glad you did

Personally, I would not go into significant debt for an undergraduate education at either one.
However if I could pay $50,000 a year without borrowing money, I would go to Duke
