Is this schedule possible in Winter 09..

..or will I hate life if I do this?

20 units

Math 32B
Phys 1B
Comp Sci 32
Comp Sci 35L
English Comp 3

If you dont plan on grad school, the pay off of getting the classes done with would be worth it.

What if I do plan on going to grad school? I just want to do what I can to not have to stay for 5 years, and maybe even double major (probably not..).

i’m sure it’s possible…but i don’t see why you would want to do that. 1B is the most difficult class in the 1-series, CS is time-consuming, and most people find 32B difficult.

If you take those classes, then peace, it was good knowing you…you may end up killing yourself or having absolutely no social life…but if your motivation is through the roof, then all the more power to you.

Well, if you get straight A’s this quarter while putting in less than 20hrs of studying, knock yourself out.

depends on what kind of life you want.

a couple of CS students (who aren’t too social) I know push themselves to take 5 classes a quarter (one of them being CS111) and get amazing grades. but they have plans on majoring with a minor or study abroad..or something else they really want to achieve.

if your main reason is to avoid graduating in 5 years..maybe it’d be best to map out your 4 year plan and see if it’s reasonable to take 5 classes (some of them being GEs or electives) rather than taking a bunch of Major classes. or maybe you might find that it’s possible to never take 5 classes at a time and still graduate in 4 years.

To break down your course selection:
CS32 and CS35L are already extremely time consuming. CS35L has less workload as the quarter progresses, but if you’ve never been exposed to Unix, then the class will be a ******. CS32 - my hardest CS course of the CS31/32/33 series. I really don’t advise in taking those two CS courses at once..

As for the other courses, they’re just lower division courses. If you’re good at math and physics, then you’ll have no problem. But the hw assignments and studying still takes time.

Didn’t take EngComp3 so don’t know what it’s like.

Good luck!

good luck even fitting all of those classes into your schedules without conflict or even getting into them, let alone doing well in them

I took Physics 1A, Math 32B, CS 32, and Eng Comp 3 last winter. Though I did as well that quarter as any other, it was by far the most draining. The worst came when I had to work on English essays at the same time as the later CS 32 projects.

I’m taking 35L right now, and it’s fine, but that may be because I had a bit of exposure to linux prior to the class.

So, yes it’s very doable, but by no means fun.

I kind of regret not taking another class this quarter. I’m currently taking CS31, Math 32A, CS1, and Eng Comp 2 (14 units) and so far its been extremely laid back for me.

How difficult is CS 32 for people that have already programmed in the past? Because I’m taking CS 31 right now and I find it to be terribly easy with 2 years of Java.

What if I have used Linux in past to run a server? Does that simplify CS 35L a little bit?

Lastly, what if I only take 4 classes next quarter and skip out on CS 35L? How much more manageable is that?

just wait on 35L and take the other 4 classes? those 4 at once should be manageable and that’ll be the pace you go at for the next three years as an engineer…

The final was open note/open book and the mean and median were both 60. That’s not a lot lower than that in CS 31, but consider your competition. In CS 32, it’s mostly CS/EE who are at least a little interested in programming and most have a good deal of experience. And the last two projects will take you several hours, even if you’re an excellent programmer (thousands of lines of code with medium-difficulty algorithms versus simple CS 31 programs that were only a few hundred lines long).

the first two projects for CS31 are jokes (both for CS and non-CS majors). after project 3, it starts to get a bit more time consuming. your current schedule is nothing compared to your prospective winter schedule…

And i highly advise you take the 4 classes without CS35L :)

unless you’re like one of those programming geniuses who finish the projects in 2 hours.

I am a Computer Science major and in Spring '08 I took:

Physics 1B

Math 32A

Physics 4AL

CS33

Comm 10

Which is 21 units, and lets say I very much regret it.

Physics 1B, unless you love physics, is not an easy course. Physics 4AL is a lab and took considerable amount of time. Math 32A is not that bad, but still time consuming. CS33 was the real killer for me in terms of time- sucking away time from other classes for the ridiculously lengthy projects (and I’ve been programming since 3rd grade, and have been hired as a software developer for 4 summers and also worked as a freelance software developer). And Comm 10 is far from a GE if you’re not a Comm major.

As far as your proposed schedule, be prepared to not have a life, and unless you have a lot of CS experience (and even if you do), CS 32 and even CS 33 (unless you have a Linux experience) will suck up your time from your other classes. It’s doable, but it won’t be fun, and the CS classes might end up hurting your grades in the other classes just because of the time drain they are. Math 32B is probably one of the harder in the 31/32/33 math series depending on your teacher, and as I said Physics 1B is not an easy course. English Comp 3 is well English, never had to take it, but I’ve heard its not too bad, just be prepared for some essays. I’d say push at least one of the CS classes off, even if you take out 35L its still a challenging schedule, and its easy to move 35L to anywhere since its only 2 units.
