is this situation hopeless?

i am a hs senior now.. and as i begin to fill out my apps.. i am getting increasingly worried!!

I have only a few really notable extracurricular activities:

-HS Soccer (4 yrs, Senior year Captain, All League Academic award (10th & 11th grade), most improved player (11th grade) *in season=11 hrs/wk

-Club soccer (about 6 years, Captain) *in season=8 hrs/wk

-Working at a gym about 8 hours a week

because soccer sucks up an extremely large portion of my time, and with work from my ap classes at school, i have not been able to make a large volunteering commitment.. I have a couple hours here and there, but nothing really big.. will colleges view this lack of activities as a big negatives?

*any suggestions on how to highlight the positives of this situation in my college applications?

thanks so much for any input!!

You have shown a real commitment to soccer--highlight your ability to focus on something that has been really important to you (soccer). Working in a gym relates nicely to that--you have followed your interest in athletics by working for pay in a related area as well. Don't sell yourself short. And since you are captain of the team, an additional recommendation from your coach might be helpful in addition to ones from classroom teachers.

Do you have any chance of being recruited?

Your excurriculars show depth, commitment, leadership and steady growth in responsibility-what more could a school possibly want to see? Stop worrying.

wha'ts ur gpa/sat score?

Wait, you're worried about not having enough EC's? That's nothing to worry about. You've shown dedication to soccer.. You don't need a laundry list of EC's for college. Teacher Recs/ EC's/ Essays are important in tippy top schools where everyone has a ridiculously good resume and to put you over the top in reachy schools. Don't worry about it.

The answers depend, to some extent, on how good you are at soccer. Are you good enough to be recruited? To play at a college level?

floridagatgrl^

sats= 2040
overall gpa=4.2

What kind of schools are you considering? Because there are many fine schools that will accept you based on those scores and grades without caring about your ECs or essays at all.

hunt^
my top choices are northeastern, bu, bc, but i am also interested in the UCs b/c i'm a california resident :)

You will be fine. It's a ton better to have a few ECs that you are dedicated to than to have a laundry list of things that don't even reflect you.
You should definitely apply to the UCs by the way :D
Good Luck!

so not having any volunteer work won't be that big of a deal? i am really freaking out =/

During soccer season, you have 27 hours a week of EC commitments. How could you be expected to do more? You show leadership in both of your soccer teams. (The UC's actually used to give points for this sort of thing; think they still do.) And, you have an 8 hour a week paid job, that further demonstrates responsibility and is related to your interest in sports. You have a great GPA and a solid SAT score. Calm down!

okay nester, thank you!!

tmc09: the "voluntarism" paranoia is overblown. Consider the child of a single parent who needs to work 25 hrs/week so her family can meet monthly expenses. Do you think adcoms would knock her for not having beaucoup volunteer hours? Lots of people aren't "middle class" yet are sought after by top schools.
