My freshman and sophomore year I had low gpas (3.0 & 3.2). During this time my mom was in and out of rehab for alcoholism and we were having some very serious family issues. My junior year (this year) things have finally settled down and I have a gpa of 3.7 for this year. I have a good sat score from my first time taking it (1850) and I'm planning on taking it 2 more times. Is this situation worth mentioning? Will it help my chances? If so, what is the best way to go about explaining this? I would really appreciate some advice

You could talk to your high school guidance counselor and let them know. Ask them to mention in the recommendation they fill out for you that you had some serious family issues your firs two years of high school, but your family is past them now and your grades & test scores show that. And then just make sure you keep it up through this year and next fall, and study hard for your SAT.

Bump!!!

You could make how you were impacted by these events your essay topic or include it in the 'other information" section of the common app if you want

Definitely mention it. Don’t write a sob story, but talk about how you were effected by those events and how you’ve worked to overcome them.
