Is this the end of the world? Give your perspective.

I have a 1510/1600 SAT and am in the top 5 percent of my class so I'll have a full ride to my state university, Rutgers New Brunswick, and be in the honors program. The other schools I'm applying to are ivies and McGill University. If I get rejected from the ivies, would I be crazy to go to Rutgers instead of McGill? I'm also applying for a scholarship at McGill, which would bring the cost to around 15k a year if I get it. Are Rutgers and McGill that different in reputation?

Unless McGill has some amazing program in your area of interest that Rutgers doesn’t, you’d be crazy to turn down a full ride.

Just my opinion.

McGill and Rutgers are of similar rank/quality IMO.

Full Ride at the Honor Program at Rugters? Go for it.

Rutgers seems like just a step above community college, though. Moreover, won’t it be difficult to get a job after going there due to the stigma of the degree?

I’ve never heard anything bad about Rutgers.

rutgers, rutgers.

Rutgers sucks. So now you have =)

jkjk - um…people turn down ivies for a full ride at rutgers! go for it. i live in NJ too so i would know.

Don’t forget that attending McGill would entail living and learning in Montreal, which could be a great experience.

kungfu: Outside of the NJ area, Rutgers actually has a good rep, frankly. I guess those who get out of the NJ area are the cream of the crop and has been good ambassadors! LOL

Anyways, you’ll be in the Honors pgm, w/no debt and your parents’ retirement will be a little more secure. Rutgers certainly has the resources to give you an excellent education. Don’t sweat it a bit. Congratulations, frankly. You are very lucky.

Also cut that “end of the world” stuff. In relative terms, you have nothing to crow about. How about the ~25% of HS seniors who started 4 months ago who won’t even graduate?

Employers in the U.S. will be far more familiar with Rutgers than McGill.

I would take the free ride at Rutgers and go to grad school with money saved. The best grad school will get the job and money earned will be higher. You are in a really smart position.

I didn’t realize McGill had such a bad rep in the Us.

McGill doesn’t really have a bad rep, it’s a good school but it’s just a little bit unknown. It’s kind of like an LAC lol

McGill, internationally, ranks in the top 20. It’s rlly good, albeit slightly unknown in the US.

bump bump bump

Go to the place that fits what you want most, because their reputations will not make a difference in the long haul I’m sure. If what you really want is a free ride, then obviously Rutgers is going to be a stronger candidate.
