Is this the point of no return for me?

Spring 2008 was my first semester at a CC and unfortunately I was not able to finish with anything resembling stellar marks. Close to finals, somebody very close to me died, and I had to go out of the country for the funeral and to take care of some finances for them. I contacted my teachers as soon as possible, in an effort to try and do a late withdrawal from my classes, however only one teacher was able to accommodate me, the rest had to fail me (I guess due to the fact I missed the final and one test a week or two prior). I ended up with 3 F's and one I.

This semester, I am retaking 3 of the courses, two I got an F in and the one I got an "I" in (all of these were electives, Phil 100, Anth 102, and Psych 100). The other class I got an F in was Biology and I will be retaking that next spring.

My intent is to transfer to a T50 school as I have the desire and I am an excellent achiever of results when I put my mind to it. Is failing one semester going to ruin my chances in perusing a good education, or can I make a comeback from this as long as the classes I retake have all A's in them and I maintain a strong GPA? How will my GPA be calculated and looked upon by UCLA / UCB if I have retaken the classes with an A or B?

Thanks for your help!

arplayer> I believe that there is an appeals process that you can attempt. Talk to a counselor at your cc. Secondly, you can file for academic renewal. Every school is a little different but, basically the term that is under renewal is not counted against your GPA (it is effectively ignored). Finally, you can retake the courses. This will replace the grade points. You would be able to discuss this situation on your admission essay for the UC system.

CalBear,

Thanks for your help. I looked into the academic renewal. After 12 months, I might be able to renew my first quarter. However, I am still going to retake the classes and get the grades I would have gotten so it doesn’t look like I am a total tool. Hopefully I will have a shot.
