I'm starting my senior year in high school and have been faced with a challenge.

I had planned on taking: AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP English, AP Government and Economics, AP French, and Marine Biology Honors.

However, today I received a call from my guidance counselor informing me that AP French will not be available because only three students had signed up

After looking through my schools courses, I couldn't find a thing. (My school is only two years old, there is not much offered.)

So, I am considering being a teachers assistant. Would this be a terrible decision? I have always taken rigorous academic courses...this would be my first non-academic course in high school.

The colleges I am considering, starting at top choice are:
1.)The University of Florida
2.)Florida State University
3.)University of Central Florida
4.)University of South Florida

Please help. :)

I don’t think it will hurt your chances. At all.

If you TA for a French teacher, you could self-study AP French during that time. This would show academic initiative – you would be making the most of a bad situation. Go for it!

Might even give you a great topic for a college essay.

Especially since the other courses you’re taking are rigorous, I don’t think there’s any disadvantage at all to not taking AP French. And building off of smorgasbord’s suggestion, if you decide to aid for a french teacher, your counselor could even explain in your letter of rec (if the schools you’re applying to require one from a counselor, I’m not sure) that you’re aiding for a french teacher because AP french was unavailable. And if you self-studied for AP in that time, maybe in addition to aiding the teacher, it would definitely show initiative on your part. And to be honest, even if you didn’t self-study for the ap test during this time, I don’t think it would prevent you from being accepted at all.

Wow, that’s such a good idea! I had never even thought of it!

The problem is they might not have french at all. I know the french teacher I had throught high school left. I’m not certain of they are getting a new one or not. But, I really hope so!
