Is this to risky?

So I have begun the tedious process of starting to write my college admission essays. For the common app I am picking this prompt:

• Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

So for this prompt I am going to write about how I challenged my beliefs about gay marriage during my high school career going from not agreeing with it to being a supporter. Is this topic too risque? What do you guys think?

No, it’s 2013. But I don’t think they’re looking for a time when you challenged your own beliefs.

I mostly meant risqu

I think it would be fine, as long as you are sure to explain why you believe it without saying anything that would offend somebody not holding the same opinion as yourself.

But I agree with the above in that I’m not sure if it wants you to tell of a time in which you went against your own beliefs… It might be fine to though.

I think this is a really bad idea. Keep politics and religion out of your essays (with the exception of religious or political experiences that focus on you and not your actual beliefs).

If you were to say in this thread,

I think you would have gotten much different responses as to whether you should write your essay or not. Which just goes to show how strongly people feel about it.

Your topic is probably comparatively safer compared to other political or religious topics, because colleges tend to be very liberal places (especially in this matter), but I still wouldn’t take the risk. Never write something that may offend the adcom.

By writing an essay like this, you also run the risk of turning it into a debate paper. College essays are supposed to be about who you are, how you’ve grown, overcoming obstacles, etc. If your essay (a) tells the adcoms that you’re for gay marriage, and then goes onto (b) list reasons why gay marriage should be legal, the topic becomes gay marriage- when the topic should be you.

Did you actual do anything IRL as a result of this opinion change?

Wow thanks guys! I’m most definitely changing my topic to something more about myself.
