I am currently a sophomore, and my school only offers one AP before junior year. I'm taking the World History AP exam in June, and this is how my schedule will look for 2011-2012:

AP Calc BC
AP Physics C
AP USH
AP English 11 (idk if its lang or lit)
Spanish 11H (take the AP in 12)
College Accounting
Band

Those are my core classes, just wondering what you guys think of that. Is it enough? Is it too late to self study the easy APs in junior year like human geography, psych, gov, environmental science, etc. I am aiming for around 13 APs by the end of my career, is that good enough for HYPS?

13 APs is definitely overkill for HYP. With that courseload, you will have no time for the vast hours of community service that HYP applicants all have. Most HYP candidates have 9-10 APs as I understand…and I don’t think doing more than that will get you much distinction. HYP wants people that go to Sierra Leone and saves kids from civil war - not 13 APs. HYP wants kids that interned with the US Congress Rep for their district - not 13 APs.

As I understand, taking 9+ APs just puts you in the “Academically acceptable” category, meaning your application will be considered rather than thrown in the bin. Anything above doesn’t make much of a difference at all unless you’ve done something that nobody has done before. As you understand, most HYP candidates are very good scholars and pedants - HYP distinguishes based on character, ECs and achievements outside the classroom.

Take as many APs as you will be comfortable with getting ALL 5s(it should be rigorous, but you should not be getting any 4s. If you are, its too many APs), and ample community service with lots and lots of ECs.

OR

Do IB like moi. Then most of that is sorted ^_^

Well…if you really really want to go to hyp you should definitely take the hardest schedule possible and get A’s or A-'s in all your classes. I know a kid that got into Princeton but rejected from Harvard and Yale who took 26 AP tests with almost all 5’s and 4’s. It’s not a for sure thing but it helps.
