Is this too much?

Next year I plan to take
AP Chemistry
AP Statistics
AP Calculus AB
Physics H
It is a lot of math, but to do this my senior year would greatly benefit me in college. Has anyone taken this many math oriented classes at once before? Is it too much to do in one year? Please give me your input!!!!!!!

it would only benefit you if you can do the work..read the threads about people getting C and Ds, etc while taking too many classes and they are in danger of getting admissions revoked...so try and strike a balance

Personally I don't think AP Stats is worth it(and it shouldn't count as a math). It depends who your teachers are, but Chem and Calc are going to be tough, but if you actually do the work, you could pull it off. Honors Physics is not as hard as it seems. All of the problems are plug ins, if you undserstand the concepts and have an equation sheet, you're set.

Are these your only classes? If so I think you need to take a Humanities class of some sort- a 4th year of English which many colleges expect or History or language instead of Statistics. Agree that AP Statistics is considered a "light weight" AP compared to AP Calculus. Usually students that aren't prepared for AP Calculus take Statistics instead.

I'd lose the AP Stats class.

Of course I have other classes I'm only mentioning the 4 above because they are all mathmatically rigorous and I want to know, from those who have had similar schedules, if I am biting off more than I can chew.

stats is a joke. Calc isn't such a big deal - just a lot of derivative work.

Just so I'm clear I'm getting the impression that you all think AP stats is easy right, not mathematically rigorous?

^ no, not at all....i got a 4 on the test by cracking open my textbook a week before the test and self studying

Calc concepts are not difficult at all, and our teacher gives no HW, so it's pretty chill. Dont know what your class is like

Physics H isn't too bad either....the hardest class might be chemAP, depending on how serious your teacher is

go for it

^^ It's like an english class with a few math symbols

trust me, you won't be able to handle that schedule

consider dropping a few of them.

i had almost the same thing jr year
AP PHy, Chem, Bio, german, english
5AP's

Ummm I ruined my straight-A's by taking three math-oriented classes...AP Calc, AP Physics, AP stats (along with AP English)....and it was a semester from hell. If you are into math/science, go for it...if you're just doing it to get into college/make it easier for you in college, I wouldn't recommend doing it, because it's highly stressful!

^ We're on block scheduling - but I had AP Calc and AP Stats together, and have AP Phys along with some AP social sciences and I'm not dying. At all.

tell you this right now, calc isnt a joke. so, unless you really want to spend time studying, i suggest you think twice before taking it. the average grade is usually a C/B- in almost every school.

^ Haha - and where are you getting this info? If you've always been good at math, calc won't be too challenging.. or very work intensive for that matter. If you haven't always been good at math, calc may be a bit more of a challenge.

Well, as everyone else has said, it really depends on the student. I would say that in general it doesn't sound too bad to me, but I would second (third, whatever) the other posters who suggested leaving out AP Stats if you are worried about grades. I know a ton of people who took it, and none of them think it is worthwhile. Many colleges (Princeton, for example) do not only not give credit for the AP exam, they don't even recognize the exam. That's a pretty clear message that it is a low priority class. Beyond that, AP Chem is tough, H Physics is probably fine if you are decent at science, and AP Calc AB is fine if you are decent at math. So, one possibly tough course and two decent-but-not-killer courses seems very managable to me.

I'm taking 5 APs and would recommend against it. Even if your classes are easy, you still have to study for your APs. I'm taking BC Calculus right now and hating it because my teacher gives us hours of homework. I run on a block schedule as well as and Calculus homework makes about 1/2 of all the homework that I get. The only Calculus class that non-math people should take is AP AB Calculus. Don't take BC Calculus like I did. It's like shooting yourself in the foot.

On the other hand, dismiss AP Stats. It's not challenging and colleges don't care. AP Physics might be impressive, but REMEMBER to take classes that you actually like. If you take classes you hate, you're just going to be miserable for the rest of the year. How do I know? Because it's happening to me now. -_-

This year I took/am taking (we're on block scheduling):

-AP Stats
-AP Calc (AB, probably, but I may shoot for BC) <--considered a GPA-buster at my school, but I got an A
-AP Physics C <--a continuation of AP Calc, with AP Physics (Mechanics)
-Marine science <--not a very rigorous class
-AP French <--I love foreign language, so this is cake for me
-World Religions <--much tougher than most AP classes! An infamous GPA-crusher
-Drama III <--writing-intensive
-Stagecrafts <--no homework; basically, you get an A if you show up and don't kill or maim anybody

I am a humanities type, though I enjoy math and am interested in science. I can tell you right now that--in my experience--taking 3 math-based APs is NOT "too much," when AP Stats is one of them. It was said before in this thread, and I concur: AP Stats isn't like a math class at all. There's a bit of math, but mostly it's just thinking about data and organizing it. Lots of tedium. Most of the math, it seems, is calculating percentages, which we learned to do when we were, what, 9? 10? Right. So, don't worry about AP Stats. Don't worry about it if you decide to keep it, and don't worry about it if you decide to drop it.

I can't tell you about AP Chem, though. I don't know how much math that entails. Do you enjoy chemistry? Are you good at it? If so, then don't balk at taking the class. :)

Good luck.

I won't even consider droping calc ab, chem, or even stats (which many of you think I should). The only course of the 4 math orriented courses I would consider changing is honors physics. Is Physics H really hard?
