So, one of the questions on the UVA supplement is: "What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?"

I am thinking of writing about the book: "Monster", which is an autobiography of "Monster" Kody Scott, one of the founders of the Crips (a L.A. street gang)

I plan to write about how this book made me appreciate the power of the written word, and the relativity of morality.

But is it too risky to write about a book about a murderer?

My other choice would be to write about the Divine Comedy...

for one thing it is unique and if you think you can pull off an essay with no negative connotation it should be ok. It is risky depending on the reader. If you think you have a good shot at UVA I say go with the Divine Comedy, if you think you need something amazing too push you over the edge try Monster but only if you can write it without hurting your image in the process

imo, since the prompt specifies that it can be something that unsettled you, they’d be okay with controversial topics. They wouldn’t have asked for unsettling subjects if they weren’t expecting to get any.
Sounds like an interesting essay!
