Is this too trite?

I just had a question about my essays. I went on a service trip to Nairobi, Kenya and wrote one of my college essays on it. Do you think a service trip is really trite to write an essay or do u think its ok to write an community service essay if its about a service trip to Kenya?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is: Is a service trip to Kenya unique enough that it won't be just another trite essay on community service?

That is up to you. It's not the topic, it's what you do with the topic.

If your essay is personal, detailed, honest, and revealing, something that, ideally, no one else could write, then it won't matter how many others have written on your topic. Reveal your unique take, your unique experience, your unique personality, and your essay will help you.

On the other hand, if you write a McEssay (see U.Va. Office of Admission Essays), then your essay will not help you.
