Is this true? (Lang/Lit AP question)

Is it true that, if you were to pass both your Language and Literature APs, colleges won't take both as credit, but rather one or the other?

Does anybody know if colleges prefer one exam over the other, or is it varied? I'm looking to get into Brown, Georgetown, or NYU, so I'm guessing the best thing for me to do is just contact those schools?

That is what I have heard.

It is definitely true of Georgetown. Georgetown also does not accept US History... (at all).

Yes, you should contact those school or check their websites which usually have the conditions for granting AP credit. In my own case, I received credit for both of the exams, but I have heard of the policy that you mentioned. I think it is really dependent on the school.

Damn. I just got a 5 on my US History AP, too :(...

I know me too, I just tell myself that I'm happy that I know all that stuff now...? (sometimes it works and other times it's discouraging)

sorry to burst your bubble, at least about Georgetown giving credit, so quickly!

whoa so i have another chance to get english credit. i got a 2 on lang. hopefully i pass english literature.

Well at USC, I got credits for my AP Lit, but I don't get to skip out of any classes.

it definitely depends on the school. uva gives credit for both, i think, but other schools i applied to (ie, vanderbilt) only gave credit for one.

btw i didnt study for lit at all and got a 4 so it wasnt particularly hard, as long as you read the right books and actually know what they mean (as opposed to cramming for a test and then forgetting all the characters' names). i got lucky and used one of my jr term paper books (we had to write a 10 pg term paper on an author and 3 of his books) for one of the essays. bulled the poetry one. etc. basically a big bulling essays exam imho.

That sucks, I'm planning on taking both.

You'll want to check the AP policy at each school you're considering. Some schools take both, some only take one, and some don't take either. Furthermore the grades required for credit vary from school to school. At many schools each department decides what APs are acceptable and what scores are required.

In short, check with the schools.

I believe adcoms generally prefer to see AP Lit on a transcript rather than Lang, but I'm not sure if there are any general differences in the amounts of credit they receive.
