Is this true???

In order to attend Summer school at a university the only type of financial aid that can be obtained is by the means of loans. Is this true???

My financial aid office told me this and i was wondering why grants are not given for summer.

I have run into this myself. The schools feel that summers are for working and taking time off from school. If you need money to go, then summer is set aside to earn your share. Economics and logic play no part.

This came up when one of my spawn needed one more 3 hour class at the end of a spring semester to graduate. So with one class in the summer he could finally be done, get a real job, and be "off my payroll." He had basically gotten a free ride for the previous four years, but could not get a penny to take that last class. He could have gotten grants and everything else to cover a full load of classes in the following fall semester, which made no economic sense at all. So to get it done, we scraped together the dough to pay full price for that last class in the summer.

Here is all I know...

Schools have limited funds. They really do. And, they focus on the Fall and Spring terms. Also, there is a limit to how much a student can obtain in grants for the Fall and Spring terms and that is all tied up in your EFC.

Therefore, you could very well take a gamble and modify your financial aid package where you only have the money covered for classes and/or housing with no surplus amount for anything and then you could obtain monies for the summer. But, if you ever decide to take this kind of gamble - please sit down with your fin aid advisor and make sure it is most Kosher and get things in writing.

Also, if you can arrange, you can be a transient student somewhere else for the summer. That kind of thing you have to clear with your academic advisor. For example, you can take a language over at your local CC, if it is totally applicable to your course of study - but ask permission first.

Or, you could have dt123 adopt you. Or, you can piece together some money from the Fall until the end of Spring to pay for one class out of pocket. Who knows? There are viable options out there.

(^_^)

If you know you will need funding for a summer term, you can always speak to your FA Counselor in advance and they will help you prepare an FA budget which can include some, allbeit, limited funding to use for the summer term.

Talk to your FA counselor -- each college/university have different policies. I know that at mine, I can move the funds I was awarded for Spring semester to Summer -- but only the Stafford loans and Pell Grants, not the state grant nor the institutional grants.

Thanks for the response. Fortunately I have set some money aside just incase. I had many scholarships and have a good bit left every semester so this should be enough to cover room and board, tution, and etc for summer.....I hope.
