I just got a phone call from a current senior at Brown. Unfortunately I missed it because my phone was in the other room, but basically in her message she said she was just calling to to say hi and wanted to know if I had any questions about Brown life. I thought that was really nice and I was just wondering if Brown makes an attempt to contact every applicant like that. If so, that’s a really neat idea. It makes me feel like I’m not just a nobody in tens of thousands of people haha.

Well it depends, did you have an interview already? It might have been a substitute for that, just allowing you to get some extra info.

Yeah, I had an interview like two weeks ago. It was a phone interview though. Nevertheless, I think it went well. The interviewer said he was really impressed. But yeah, I was just wondering if this was a normal sort of thing.

I got a phone call today too! I had my interview about 3 weeks ago, and also missed the call. She left a message and was very nice, and she said she was going to call back tomorrow… I have no idea what this phone call means, though! They can’t possibly call all 30,000 applicants… can they?

It would be super helpful if someone out there (preferably someone attending Brown who received this phone call) could tell us what this means? I’m very confused.

coolkitkat… did you also have a phone interview?

I received one of these calls around a similar point in the year as well when I applied 5 years ago. I’m not sure if they’re specifically targeted (doubtful), I think it’s just another way we try and put a personal face on Brown.

Seeme25: I unfortunately missed the telephone call, however, the student said that she would phone again today. I’ll keep you posted on what happens, however, she said in the message that she wanted to better inform me of what it was like being a student at Brown, wanted to know if I had any questions, and wanted to get to know me better…In essence, very similar to a phone interview, I would presume. However, I had an alumni interview about 3 weeks ago, which is why this phone call struck me as strange… It brightened my day to hear the message on my answering machine, though!

I wish something like this happened to me! Schools that ‘like’ a candidate will start coaxing them into accepting their offer WELL before the decisions come out. They want good students to accept their offer! NOW, the decision is in your field. We spend our entire lives trying to make a school like us, and now they have a little less than two months to make you like them.

I got the call too, though I already had an interview.

what exactly did you guys talk about? and when did you get the call?

I didn’t answer it because I didn’t know who it was lol. I got it twice, at 4:30 and 4:50. the first time she called she didn’t leave a message, which is why I didn’t answer the second time (thought it was a bill collector lol).

LOL @ usagi

thinking a brown university student is a bill collector. priceless.
regardless, good luck! it’s definitely not a bad sign. at worst, they just want to get to know you better. at best, it means they want you to come to brown!

keep us other hopefuls updated!

o haha. it’s cool that I’m not the only one who got the call, but none of us picked up! I got the call at 4:52 but I didn’t look at my phone until later. I hope she calls again. Maybe this time one of us will answer and we’ll know what this is all about =p

I got the call, as well. When I Googled the email address that I was given, it turns out that the address is part of the Brown University Third World Center and their minority/student of color recruitment efforts. Interesting! (By the way, I am part Asian.)

It makes sense that it would be a minority student recruitment type thing :3 I got it too, and actually talked to the student. I’m awful at these types of things, so I just asked simple questions about class sizes and the food and so on but it was pretty informative. I had an in-person interview at the end of January myself.
I’m so nervous about Brown!

You guys have got to stop reading so much into every little thing. You’ll go crazy haha.

are you guys international applicants?

those that received the call? are you guys international applicants?

No call at our house (my D = US applicant, not minority, DID have a VERY bad interview). Did get a similar and I thought very nice e-mail that seemed the same (have a great 2nd semester, we’lre talking about you and thinking about you right now, thanks for applying to Brown, etc. Very nice touch. But not a personal call like y’all got. That’s really nice!).
