Is three years of foreign language fine for ivies, etc.?

I decided that I'm not taking Spanish next year (senior year). Is it okay that I took 3 years of Spanish? I have been taking Spanish since 4th grade, but I have a language learning problem and Spanish is getting tougher and tougher. I currently have a B in my honors spanish class. I plan to learn Japanese over the summer and I can understand Hindi and Marathi (Indian language) decently. What do you think?

I think it’s 3 years for a UC school and 4 years for an Ivy.

@strium168 Is it required or is it recommended? Should i do Spanish next year even though I really don’t want to?

I think the most important thing to do is to do what you truly want. If you’re only taking Spanish to get into an Ivy, you shouldn’t do it. Besides, if you take 3 years of a foreign language, and you’re stellar in every other aspect, you’ll still make it into an Ivy. Foreign languages aren’t the most important part!

:)

@strium168 Thanks for the warm advice. What makes me happy will lead to more happiness.

4 is preferred. Most Ivies have a foreign language requirement to graduate unless you test out, which you won’t with 3 years, Take the 4th year and test out.

BTW, if you are finding Spanish “tougher and tougher” you are in for a rude awakening with Japanese. You may START to learn it over the summer, but you will not LEARN it over the summer.

@skieurope I don’t have room for spanish in my schedule. Can I just take it during college or is it absolutely mandatory to have 4 years of foreign language during high school?

If you’re dedicated to an Ivy, taking it online might be an option.

Wait, what?

Four years are recommended; three (sometimes two) years are required. It’s not like they’ll reject you specifically for only having three years of a foreign language, but everyone applying to top schools needs all the help they can get. If you drop Spanish, take a challenging class in a different subject in its place.

It’s not mandatory to take 4 years in HS, it’s preferred. That being said, you will be competing with kids who on their fifth level or beyond, so if you only going through Spanish III, you really have to stand out somewhere else on your transcript.

Yes you can finish up the requirement in college. Personally I’m trying to knock out as many gen ed requirements as I can so I can focus the college years to taking classes I love.

If it’s of any comfort - the two boys who have been accepted so far to ivies at my school both only had two years of a foreign language - Italian for one, Spanish for the other. They both hated foreign languages and dropped them their Junior year to make room for APs.
