Hello, I’m an international student. Studying BSEE on my second year in the Univerity of Evansville, IN. I don’t like the place ( the school is good but I’m not happy here at all). I want to transfer to California my only options is CSUN ps. because of the sponsor. for you guys who know anything about any of the school please help.
ps. I already applied for Fall17 in CSUN
California schools are highly impacted due to the overwhelming population. California has more residents than the entire country of Canada and only a handful of universities. Even residents such as myself struggle to get admitted due to lack of space in their preferred major. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to transfer. Is CSUN the only school that offers your major? If so you might have trouble getting in. CSUN is in the heart of Los Angeles in a highly populated area with thousands of locals looking for admission. What don’t you like about your current school? Have you even started working on coursework for your major, or are you just finishing up general ed classes? If so, you might be disliking the school because general ed classes are rarely interesting and you are going to be miserable with them regardless of which school you go to. Perhaps try exploring your major more st your current school and observe some classes to see if they are offering what you are looking for? Another thing to keep in mind is that everything in California is twice as expensive living wise than IN. Room and Board on campus is limited so it’s possible you won’t get housing right away on campus. So you have to be prepared to make other arrangements. Even with assistance from financial aid rent will be expensive. Just renting a room nearby can easily cost you between $650 and $1200 a month not including utilities. If you have a car you have to worry about the costs of parking and gas prices which will cost you on average $40 to $50 weekly because driving to get to places is a necessity. There are so many other costs to consider but you being an international student are probably no stranger to costs. I don’t want this to discourage you from transferring or at least trying to but I just want you to take into consideration of all the aspects. Ask yourself the following:
Can I afford it?
Will I be okay if I have a financial emergency?
Why do I want to leave my current school?
Is the reason fixable without transferring?
Does CSUN offer something to my education that my current school does not?
I think once you have the answers to these wuestions, you will have a clearer understanding on wherher or not you should transfer. It would have been more favorable to apply to more than one CSU as a back up but it’s too late for that. If possible ai would try applying to some of the private universities around CA since their application periods ate still open. Checkout Chapman, LMU, Concordia, California Baptist, and Pepperdine. Best of luck to you.
My mom went to CSUN and I grew up in the feeder area for that school.
My mom wouldn’t even let me apply to CSUN because she hated it. She said it’s so impacted you’ll never get the classes you need (it took her like 5 and a half years to graduate bc she couldn’t get classes) and it’s not a highly respected school. For people in the area it’s actually kind of looked down upon. Coming from the feeder area, we only needed a 2.5 to get in so it was kind of where people went as a last resort.
It’s also a huge commuter school so if you’re looking for the college experience you probably won’t get it there. Like I said most people who go there are from the area so most students there already have friends and usually still live with their families.
That being said, if moving to L.A. is something you really want it’s a good option. Most people at the school already know the area and have connections in L.A. It also probably won’t be hard to find a job because there are a lot of jobs in the area. My mom graduated with a degree in marketing and has been working for Disney ever since. So although it’s not the best school, you’re future will probably be fine.
Also all CA schools prioritize in-state transfer so coming from out of state might more difficult than usual.
Can you afford the full fees at CSUN? $40K per year. I didn’t understand what you meant by the “sponsor”.
CSUN is a California public school which means that it is funded by the state of California and its taxpayers.
You will not receive a dime of financial aid from CSUN.
If you plan on transferring, you need to be aware that some credits from your current university may not transfer. Email the admissions office and see if some of your courses will transfer. CSUN is a commuter campus but it also is a very LARGE campus. You may not like CSUN either, so take inventory of your current university and ask yourself what you want in a school before you make plans to move.
As an international student, your visa limits how and where you can work. After graduation, it is expected that you will return to your country after receiving your diploma. Immigration rules are strict and limiting.
