With all this news I'm hearing about budget cuts to state schools (which is a majority of what the transfer schools I applied to are), kids losing finaid, classes being cancelled, etc., would it just be a REALLY bad idea to try and transfer this year?

You are asking the question that you yourself answered, i.e., “applied” came in past tense.

Not enough information. How much is your tuition currently, and what unis do you want to transfer to? Some are holding up better than others.

oh sorry! Tuition (with all the necessary fees and junk included)= about $12,000 (I’m an in-state student). And I’m on an almost full ride (I only have 2,000 in loans). However, my reasons for trying to transfer are very serious and I’ve actually weighed all my options…and I just really don’t want to stay. It’s not like a “apply and see if I can get in, and if not I’ll just stay” kind of situation, its more like a “please god let me get in somewhere else because I just cant stay here” kind of situation…that’s why I’m kinda worried…

Schools I’m applying/applied to…
the state schools I’m applying to are Rutgers, UT Austin, UW-Madison.

Still more information needed. Are you OOS for all of these schools? If so, you are likely to get zero FA from them. How much more would it cost to go to them? Do they offer merit aid for transfers that you are in the running for? What is your major and what are your future plans? Are you thinking of grad school or professionals school (eg. Med, Law, Business, Architecture, etc.) in the future?

If you are Minn resident, I think you get some sort of discount at Madison. But transferring to any other state public is economically foolish since you won’t likely recieve any finaid. So not only is it a bad idea to transfer this year, it’s a bad idea to transfer instate-public-to-OOS-public most years. The quality of eduction at Rutgers will be no better than Twin Cities.

UM-Twin Cities is a great college. From other posts, you mention nursing. Does UM not have a program?

UW-Madison is holding up pretty well; they seem to be raising tuition rather than cutting professors. If you are from Minnesota, you would pay roughly in-state rates. Transfers should never count on FA.

Sorry, I didn’t see that you’re from MN, so yes, the reciprocal agreement will help with the tuition cost at UWisc. However, I’m assuming you’ll still be OOS for FA at UWisc and merit money is likely to be rare for a transfer compared to your current close to full ride.
