Hey guys. I'm a freshman at NYU and just got accepted into Vandy for fall 06. Obviously after a whole year at NYU, Vandy would be quite the culture shock. I already know for a fact I am not the typical Vandy girl; I'm not preppy... I mean I dress like a girl that lives in NYC. Also I'm originally from the South but not all that southern. Is it hard to fit in at Vandy if you're atypical? Is rushing hard for transfers? If any of y'all are transfer students or know some, that would be great. Thanks!

My son transferred to Vandy this past fall. We liked that he was in an orientation group of about 20 trasfer students, I think there were more girls than boys. It was a good link in the beginning and he did do a few things with the guys after orientation week.

Everyone was really friendly to him at Vanderbilt. He didn't do the typical rush of every fraternity. Instead, he rushed, pledged, and is now initiated into BYX, a christian male fraternity. He had I think 3 or 4 sophomore pledges in his group and I think 1 or 2 dropped out;i t was a little odd to be with so many freshman, about 22. But sorority rushing is probably very different.

I think most of the sororities rush sophomores. I doubt it will be a problem.

I'm a sophomore at Bowdoin College and I got accepted to Vandy. I'm scared that it will be weird going into Vandy as a junior. Any ideas?

Weird? That depends on how much you want a change in your college environment. Living in the city of Nashville will feel very different, but if you are unhappy enough to transfer out of Bowdoin as a sophomore, then I think you must want a change.

Vanderbilt will be very accomodating both in the classes that they accept and in easing your transition. I think there was 1 transfer in my son's group, who was a junior last fall. You should be fine as long as you make an effort to get involved.
