Is tutoring club a thing??

Hi CC,

So at my HS, I’ve been given the opportunity to start a club. I was thinking I could start a tutoring club. We could have members that have high grades in certain classes tutor classmates (could this qualify for volunteer hours? If not I think it’s still a good club to be a part of.) I was wondering if any of you have tutoring clubs at your schools. Are they a success? How do they work? Are there criteria the tutors must meet in order to be a part of the club? Any information on that would be helpful. Any ideas you have would be great too!

Thanks!
Christina

I think that this club is a great idea! At my high school, there is a tutoring service after school a couple days a week. Volunteers are National Honor Society members, and the volunteering does count for volunteer hours. I think every Tuesday and Wednesday after school, students who need help go to the tutoring sessions that last about 2 hours. The volunteers who help tutor are in older grades (mainly seniors), and they help those in the younger grades. Since the majority of the tutors are students in the National Honor Society, they are known to be smart and motivated (so they’re able to help pretty much anyone). There are a few teachers/supervisors who help as well. I’d suggest making flyers and posting them around your school if you’re able to. Another idea is to ask the main office if it’s possible for your club to be announced during morning or afternoon announcements (if your school does this) so that students can hear about it. The key is to make sure that students know that this opportunity is available to them; nobody at my school knew that there was such a thing because it was never previously advertised. Good luck!!

There’s a tutoring club in my school! My HS isn’t great, so I’m not sure how often it’s used. I’m sure some students attend, though, or it wouldn’t exist. It’s mostly NHS students, but I’m not sure if there’s a required GPA. There’s flyers for the club in the hallways. I believe the club also does SAT tutoring.

In my school, peer tutoring is done by NHS members.

If it’s something you’re interested in starting in your school, some things you’ll want to consider:

  • How do you decide who can join? Obviously there will need to be some academic standards. Will potential members need teacher recommendations? Will they need to be older than the kids they tutor? Will they need to be NHS kids?
  • Where will they tutor? You'll need a quiet space, but one where they can talk. You'll want an adult there supervising.
  • When will they tutor? Study halls? After school? Before school?
  • I would suggest you have each member fill out a card, listing their ballpark averages in the major subjects, along with which period(s) they're available to tutor. That way, the guidance counselor of a kid needing a tutor could find the right one.

Thanks for all the support everyone! I was thinking people could tutor after school. The fact that NHS Members do it is a useful piece of information, and may be something I’d want to do in for my club. Unfortunately, I’m not in NHS as of now (I’m a freshman. I didnt want that to slight anyone’s opinion before, but I think it’s worth mentioning.) I think I could suggest it next year assuming I get into NHS and maybe organize the whole thing. Thanks for the responses everyone! They really helped

For us we have csf tutoring after school.
