I’m having mixed feelings about attending UC Davis, mostly because it is known as a science and agriculture school, but I want to major in Economics. I’m just worried that I will not get the same respect or jobs because I went to Davis for a non science major. Is UC Davis Econ program any good?? Does anyone think that UC Davis prestige will rise in the coming years??

Number 8 with a bullet!

Wow, ahead of Stanford!

But... Riverside is higher than both Santa Barbara and Irvine.... No way..

I'd call it Prestigious. The rankings vary, but generally it is ~8 public school. It's one of the more popular UCs as well, and is the 4th best public school in CA.

Washington Times ranked it 8, and a chinese ranking (forgot name - on wikipedia) gave it 34 in the world, ahead of Ivies.

dmission 4th behind....???? I'm guessing UCB and UCLA but what's #3 and what's your source?

UCSD would be 3rd, with the admissions stats to back it up.

Wow collegemom, great research/knowledge! It's a highly regarded school and I can assure you that it will be VERY HARD to get into in the near future! It is on the up and up! We have many friends (Docs, CEO's) that graduated from Davis and loved it! A few of my sons closest friends that were accepted to Davis got rejected from UCLA and Berkeley and were extremely sad. After I talked to them and showed them some printouts from above, they are now very excited. Wonderful school!

not to sound like a douchebag, but any ranking that puts Texas A&M as #1, I sincerely have to question. I am going to be as honest as possible and put things into perspective. I transferred (from UCD) to a school on the East coast, and there are very very few people that have heard of UC Davis. UC Davis is a wonderful regional school, but it is oftentimes overlooked nationally & internationally.

collegemom, I just want to thank you for taking such an active and informative role on the UCD forum. Your contributions are not only fact filled but they show how passionate you and your student mucs be about UCD. So, bless you for helping the rest of us out!

ilikeoranges: Which schools on the west coast are well known on the east coast or nationally/internationally?

It's actually #8 amongst Public universities in the US.
Its funding for 2008 was over 650 million dollars. Pretty good for a public school in CA.

According to the National Science Foundation, UC Davis spent $456,653,000 on research and development in the fiscal year 2002-2003, ranking it 14th in the nation. Specifically, UC Davis's expenditures nationally ranked first in agricultural research ($25,683,000), seventh in biological research ($118,477,000), and 13th in the life sciences ($336,796,000).

Its faculty includes 18 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 6 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 7 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2 Pulitzer Prize winners, 2 MacArthur Fellows and one member of the Royal Society.

The campus supports a number of research centers including: the Information Center for the Environment, the Center for Visual Sciences, the Advanced Highway Maintenance Construction Technology Research Laboratory, the University of California Pavement Research Center, among others.

In 2007 U.S. News and World Report ranked UC Davis as the 42nd best university in the United States, the 8th best public university in the U.S., and the 4th best of the UC schools (after Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD). UC Davis also ranked in the top 4 public universities in California. The Washington Monthly ranked UC Davis 8th in its 2007 National College Ranking, which focuses on level of contribution to the nation (through social mobility, research, and service).

In 2008, UC Davis was ranked 42nd in the world and 34th in the Americas by an annual listing of the Top 500 World Universities.

Admission to UC Davis is very selective. For Fall 2008, 21,256 freshmen were admitted out of an application pool of 40,568 for a freshman acceptance rate of 52.4%. On average, admitted students earned a high school GPA of 3.94.

Their library is 34th largest in the word, with over 3.5 million volumes.

Lots of people turn down other great schools to attend Davis, too: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-davis/481467-what-colleges-did-you-turn-down.html

Oh, and it's a Public Ivy, too.

Read University of California, Davis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and visit, and I guarantee you'll be satisfied

WOW!!! Everyone thanks for your thorough responses, especially college mom. I had no idea that Davis has so many links to such great internships. I'm really excited now to go because I see that Davis has endless opportunities for more than just science or agriculture majors. Thanks a bunch!!!

I hope to see you attend, librahoney08 :)

Good luck with Econ!

(I heard they have really cool internships for Econ. majors to D.C.)

dmission your post was awesome!

I hope 2 c u there 2 dmission!! Just wondering r u already at Davis or are u starting this fall???

seriously Ilikeoranges...if these boards are any indication the only schools on the west coast that people on the east coast pay any attention to are Cal, UCLA, Stanford and Reed. The fact that they don't pay attention to Davis is not surprising. Also were any of the people you spoke to employers or graduate school admissions committee members?

Reed isn't in CA. And even if it were, not one cares about it. In place of Reed I'd say Pomona or Mudd.
