Because no one even talks about it.

sorry, but thats a retarded question.....why do u think its a UC

It's a brand new university - it will take a while for it to become known.

Is it any good?

I just looked it up and the school doesn't even open until this fall. I had no idea, but it would be really cool to be the first ever graduating class. Does anyone know more about this university? I kind of wish I had applied. Also, what is the UC in the Sacramento area?

UCDavis, 20 mins west of sacramento

I went to a college fair where they were showing the drawings and talking about how the area around the university will be growing to provide a college feeling, which it doesn't have at the moment. They have big plans. I do know that they only offer a few majors - it will open with 1000 students, and hopes to have 25,000 eventually.
What's really cool about it is that it's right next to Yosemite National Park. If you love the outdoors, opportunities abound. People should
check out their website.

I think it would be interesting to be the first class- you'll for sure get great attention from professors (or at least, there would be a higher likelihood of that happening).

Anyway, I'm assuming that UCM will take the place of UCR as the "community college" of the UC system, as many people so eloquently put it. It can't possibly be that picky with its acceptance this year, seeing how many people would rather go to established universities rather than some new and unknown UC.

Because it's small for a while, and more specialized, it won't be seen in the same light as Riverside. I think it will do better.
Also, Merced is a much more attractive location than Riverside, and I don't see that changing.

It was going to come out sooner or later. Merced is actually a base where Homeland Security will be holding and touturing terrorism suspects.

The thing with Merced is that the campus is currently 1/10th of all the pretty pictures and such that they show you, and they only have a few majors available.

In the long run, it should be a sweet campus though.

What are the majors offered?

UC Merced if ranked would be lower than UCR which is currently #81 according the US News & Report 2005. UC Merced this year (2005-2006) accepted only 10,000 students. My friend applied there and got in with 3.1 w gpa and 900 sat score, some extracurricular activities, parents make 6 digit income ... is it really that easy to get into uc's this year?

^i dont think its easy to get into uc this year.....

i heard if you passed the index you were accepted to merced

well i was thinking about going to merced.. i really like that its new, and that you will be starting everything: the research, sports teams, clubs... (lol friends think im crazy for wanting to go there)

but wow i didnt realize that the ranking would be so low, and that almost anyone can get in.. a 3.1 and 900 sat damn!!

i guess my friends r right.. even with a new campus + u get to start everything, u cant compare it to ucsd or ucb

yeah, i'm pretty sure it's that easy.

Bumping the question about what majors are offered at Merced.

maybe a simply visit to their site + u will find offered majors?
lol i feel like saying RTFM.. but that doesnt really apply here

http://ucmerced.edu/future_students/academics.asp
look under Opening Majors and Academic

Many of the professors who are teaching at UC Merced are well-regarded and the vast majority have completed graduate work at universites such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Stanford, and Caltech. Hopefully, UC Merced will gain fame in the coming years and surpass UCR and UCSC.
