I know that Irvine and Orange County is a pretty wealthy area, but does that reflect the student body of UCI in any way?

I ask this in part because I calculated my aid from UCI and UCSD, and I would receive very little aid from Irvine, as opposed to the generous aid I receive from San Diego.

approximately 50% of the undergraduates were determined to have need of financial aid. So, no, I would not consider UCI a rich kid school. In fact, it may be your aid package from UCI was minimal because so many of the UCI students need aid (and there’s only so much to spread around… UCI met ~82% of students’ demonstrated need, with an average scholarship/grant award of ~$10,700).

“According to 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the median income for a household in the city is $98,923, and the median income for a family is $111,455; these numbers make Irvine the seventh richest city in the USA, among cities with population 65,000 or higher. 9.1% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.” - Wikipedia

As a 15-year citizen of Irvine, I can fully attest to the validity of the above information. Most “natives” of Irvine are pretty f-ckin’ rich. It seems like (almost) everyone here is “upper-middle class”, and many of the students have insanely nice cars.

Well UCI might be a little stingy right now like MaMoose said. So many people need FA.
I only got $7788 but I’m not complaining at least I got some FA.
But UCI didnt give me any money. =/ that was only from fafsa. And my parents make around $68,800
And I applied to a few scholarships… only 10. Doubt I’ma get any money.

Well, I’m sure the city surrounding UCSD (La Jolla) has an even higher average income, but in my experience local residents don’t hand out money to students (Donald Bren excluded… and he prefers to give buildings).

At any mid- to upper-tier UC, there will be some rich kids. But UCI has plenty of middle-class kids, and plenty hoping to make it into the middle class by getting a UC degree.
