Is UCLA really HARD?

I wouldn't know, I was never a freshman at UCLA. I transferred. But I never felt "lost," merely because I'm the guy who'll strike up a conversation with anyone. I mean, I met like four of my best friends today by just leaning over and asking, "What's up?"

People seem to be pretty nice there. That's nice to hear.

hey uclari, i hear you talkin about food around lately, and so you say u got bored of ucla food? do u mean the dorm food where u get swipes and stuff right where theres buffet every time? ive heard that the food is actually extremely good, but i assume it gets boring over time. ive also heard from a lot of other people who say the food gets boring as well, so how long do u dink it'll take for someone to get bored of the food? by the way, the food at ucla, do you mind mentioning what they serve, and is it ALWAYS the same so thats why u get bored of it or do they change it around a bit?

This is what they serve in the dorms at UCLA...

collegegirlgirl,

Here's a quote from a UCLA alum named Michi. It sums it up quite well:

"You will think it's the best damn food. I did too. You will be excited at the idea of spending a whole year eating gourmet food (and desserts) every meal. But in my opinion, it's gross. It all tastes the ****ing same. By the end of the year, no matter how much you think you LOVE dorm food when you get here, you will be SICK OF IT. I can't explain why the pasta tastes like the hamburgers tastes like the soup tastes like the tacos tastes like the eggs tastes like the roast beef tastes like the fish sticks tastes like the pizza, but it just does. This means that a 19-Premier plan probably is excessive. I've met very few people who actually manage to eat all of their 19-premier meals alone (i.e., one)."

Now, I never thought it was "gross," but the "tastes the same" thing is true. It's really quite a feat.

haha. so now if you knew beforehand how the food is and how it tastes the same basically after a while, what meal plan would u get? after hearing that, ive contemplating which meal plan i should get. i love food, and i can eat a lot, but considering people go out and eat a lot, what plan is most worth it?

also, flopsy, the site says there are only menu plans for Covel, Rieber, Hedrick, crossroads cafe, and deneve. are these the only places where you can eat the ucla food? well i originally thought there were dining halls for every dorm hall or plaza. and you can go to these places to eat regardless of where you dorm right?

14 Premier is the best plan, if you ask me.

No, not every dorm has a dining hall. For example, Dykstra shares with De Neve.

uclari, do we sign up for the meal plan when we do the housing apps?

also i have a question, are triples for 3 friends from hs guaranteed? i want to room with 2 of my friends, and i will be put under their 2nd choice roommates, so whats the possibility i'll room with them? otherwise, will they room me with other people that fit whatever description i want of a roommate on the housing app?

If I remember right, you do choose the meal plan with the housing app. But you can change it quite easily the first couple weeks.

No, it is not guaranteed. But if you put down names, you usually will do okay. Other than that, the only thing they seemed good about was not pairing up smokers/non-smokers. Other than that, I never understood housing pairing logic. NEVER.

UCLAri, if i go to med school i was planning to take maybe a gap year/break before i go to med school after undergrad.. good or bad? i mean if i find a good job for experience/research, then that wouldnt be such a big deal right? or would it be easy to lose study habits because no school for an entire year and whatnot. thanks.

GOOD GOOD GOOD GOOD GOOD.

As long as you don't go and do nothing. Otherwise, GREAT.

hahah thanks thats a relief.. jw if you don't mind me asking, but what was your reason for taking a year off? i plan to do that especially if i want to reapply to a med school i really want to go to.. or if things don't work out the first time. question... i assume you've researched about med schools.. its possible to work while schooling right? i mean its not studying all the time in med school.. that would suck.

Well, I just know what little I've gleaned off of my friends and girlfriend, so I'm not some med school admissions expert, but...

I took a year off in between undergrad and grad because I needed a break. Plus, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for grad school, so I thought that it was foolish to jump into water I didn't know about.

I know very few people with jobs while in med school.

thanks!! gl with whatever youre studying =)

International relations, and thank you.

In response to the original question, I have to say that thus far, the classes haven't been quite as hard as I expected. But then again, I'm north campus, and some of my south campus friends seem to be really stressed about their classes.

One thing, though, is that UCLA classes are truly as fast paced as everyone says. I don't think anyone could have prepared me for that. I love the quarter system now, but it definitely takes some adjusting to.

But material wise, the classes I've taken have been fairly straight forward and manageable.

thanks nobleguy. What classes are you taking now?

Things I learned at UCLA today, April 19:

Paramount is about to lose a ton of money because "nobody likes Tom Cruise because hes crazy now". Sharon Stone is "almost as crazy".

Walt Disney totally pwned ABC (before Disney literally owned ABC).

Guys can subconsciously tell when chicks are ovulating, and they're nicer during that time.

Mel Gibson was really, really effing hot when he had an accent instead of a God complex.

K. I'm a Comm major, which I anticipate highly skews my perspective. However, in response to is UCLA hard? No. Granted there was some technical comm-ish jargon thrown in between that stuff, but really, that's definitely the best of what I took away from today.

In my experience, upper divisions at UCLA have been much less stressful and generally much less difficult than my lower divs and GEs at my community college. I have no doubt, however, that this is mostly because now i get to talk about Entourage and Disneyland and its relevant to my classes and I LOVE THAT. Whereas at the CC I was lucky if I made it through a class without wanting to commit some violent act just to break up the ennui.

Anyways, my point is that if the stuff you're doing in your classes is stuff you're into, it probably won't be hard. It's only hard if you don't want to be there. And I really think that goes for any program at any school.

Man, my classes were filled with far less fun stuff. I chose the wrong major.

yes, that's why it's extremely important to chose the right major.
