i kind of want to go there, but my dad doesn't want me to, because he says it's only a party school and that i won't get a good education there...but i've gotten mixed responses from people, so is it really a party school? and is it a good one?

I am currently a sophomore at UConn and it can be a party school if thats what you make of it but any school can be. Of course there are parties, and usually a lot of them and they’re fun but thats expected with such a big school, but you can also always find things to do other than parties and with so many people here there are plenty of people also not going to parties to hangout with. A lot of the partying is in the Greek community, so whether or not youre interested in going greek will factor into your partying, but I am in a greek organization and I don’t party. UConn is very good academically, there is a HUGE array of classes offered and theyre challenging, but there are alot a ton of resources available for help. There are also a million activities and clubs to get involved in if you don’t want to party as well as a lot of academic clubs and organizations to participate in if you’re worried about academics.

It does have a reputation as a party school. However, it is known here in Connecticut as a good academic school also (some departments better than others, obviously).

A lot of that reputation comes from spring weekend, but they’ve been cracking down on that for the last couple of years and things haven’t gotten quite as out of hand.

OTOH, the [generally excellent] mens basketball team is under sanctions for not meeting academic standards…

Every college is a “party school” no matter what academic reputation it has.

I’m a freshman in UConn and I’m from Texas, which is a long way I’m sure. I was concern about the huge reputation of UConn as a party and rager school at first, too. But it’s really not. Most people here do not party, or if they do, they try to avoid drinking. College is what you make of it. It can be a party or it can be studying and academic-focused, it’s up to you. My roommate does not party and strongly disprove of people drinking (he even got out of our room and went next door to tell our neighbor to stop drinking when the smell got strong).

Many people at UConn are very smart, and academically focused. You can join a club or organization if you want…but if you want some fun, maybe a fraternity/sorority could do.

BUT, be warned…the Greek houses on campus is not good at partying. Our Greek director warned our Greek system of being expelled and shut down if alcohol is found on campus…so anything drinking or raging related is off campus now. If you want to go, it’s your choice…

I’m not a party person, as I’m trying to maintain a 3.5+ GPA for law school, hopefully. As I’ve said…college is what you make of it !!

Anyone who goes to college primarily for partying purposes shouldn’t be going. Just saying…

(not saying you are, but those who do are a waste of space in college)

As for partying in college, I don’t mind some of it, but I’m trying to keep up a 3.75+ GPA average to transfer to UT Austin, so I prefer it in moderation. Academic is by far my biggest reason for going.
