Is UC's neighborhood and surrondings safe?

Unless I missed a security alert, no one was ever beaten or seriously injured. All of the security alerts have involved muggings, so basically as long as you don’t walk around talking on your smart phone or flaunting something else nice, you will be fine.

As a side note, I wish people here acknowledged that any sense of danger partly stems from feelings of racism and that the University itself is responsible for worsening the tensions just outside of campus.

If you read these threads regularly, people “acknowledge” (or at least point out) all the time that a lot of the sense that UChicago is dangerous comes from the fact that there are many people of color around and visible, and to some students that equates to danger.

The accusation that the university is responsible for worsening tensions is a pretty common one, but it’s a despicable accusation to make unless you have some specifics to back it up. I have spent almost my entire life living in or right near mixed-race, mixed-income communities, and I don’t have the sense that Hyde Park is anywhere near the bad end of that in terms of tension. (I am speaking about now, not 20-30 years ago when there were some real differences.) So what are you talking about?

I live in Chicago, and have lived here for the past 15 years. I can personally attest that the area around Hyde Park is not safe (south and west bordering neighborhoods). That isn’t to say Chicago itself is a completely dangerous city; it’s a great city and you shouldn’t worry about getting mugged on campus or in the safer surrounding neighborhoods.

However, the adjacent neighborhoods are pretty bad, and everyone I know from Chicago tends to agree. If you end up going to UChicago though, the on-campus security is excellent (for a reason). Most students don’t venture out of Hyde park into the ghettos anyways, so this really isn’t a huge deciding factor.
