Is UCSB Practical for Me?

I am REALLY hoping to get accepted into UCSB next year. I am planning on studying Film. As college applications begin to approach, I am getting quite nervous about getting admitted to this amazing school.

My stats are as follows:

Gender: Male

Race: Caucasian

Residency: MN

GPA: UW- 3.40 (school doesn't do weighted)

Took a total of 6 Honors and 2 AP classes (so far)

Rank: ~Top 25% at highly competitive high school (Eden Prairie HS)

AP: U.S. Gov, Comparative Gov, Psychology

ACT: 27 (28 super-scored)

Senior Schedule: AP Lit, AP Stats, AP Euro, Spanish 5 (College Credit), Honors Physics, Concert Choir, AP Macro & Microeconomics

ECs:

-Executive Board Member for Drama Club (1st year on Board, 4 year member)

-Top Auditioned Choir (3 years)

-Auditioned Men's Acapella Group (2 years)

-Audition Chamber Choir (1 year)

-4 Musicals, 5 other productions (Been apart of Drama for all 4 years)

*Placed 1st at Subsections, 3rd at Sections, and 2nd at Thespian Society Competition for
our Competitive One Act.

-2 years of JV Lacrosse (Captain Sophomore Year)

-Amnesty International (1 year)

-Young Democrats (1 year)

-Various Volunteer Hours (~100 hours so far)

I know My GPA is rather low, but I think that I am overall well rounded.

So, is UCSB a practical school for me?

I think you are a solid candidate, but it might be hard since you are out of state.

Anyway, I’m not sure about going to ucsb for film. I’ve never heard about their film department, but if they do have a goOd one then i think you’ll fit in well:)

No doubt that GPA is rather low. I don’t think SB does superscore. As much as they say they do, they don’t really care about your EC. I’d say your chance is about 55%. Try for a higher ACT/SAT score and make sure your PS is good, then you’re good to go.

^Jaylower is absolutely correct. I know many people whose EC were far from satisfactory and they still got in due to superior grades.

I know that only because I accidentally left my EC blank and still got in this year -___- LOL
My grades weren’t all that good either. 3.97 weighted and 3.63 unweighted with 1850 SAT. Though, my PS was quite decent, if I may say so myself.

Thanks a lot for the help guys! I think I am going to apply and hope for the best! UCSB is an absolute DREAM for me!

Also, if it helps, my UC GPA is ~3.66. Will that increase my chances?

That doesn’t help you at all x.x Try for higher SAT/ACT and start hardassing your personal statements

Also, in my opinion, the competition next year is gonna skyrocket…Goodluck!

Well, now I’m getting a tad nervous. After takin the ACT again this June and planning on raising my GPA this fall, hopefully my chances will increase!

Bump???

I say you have a 50/50 chance. Try to get higher standardized test scores!

I got in this year with like a 3.3 UW gpa and 1900 SAT, way less EC activities than you have but I was in state.

That gives me some hope! Hopefully I will have the chance to attend! Thanks for all of the help!

i feel that being out-of-state will be more advantageous for you, since the UC campuses are in desperate need of cash, and they are taking more and more out-of-state students just to increase their funds. you should expect the tuition to be a bit more pricey than normal. but overall, i feel you are an above average student (>50% to get in UCSB)!
