Is UCSB stagnating academically?

Just like how rc251 mentioned, with the Cap that California Coastal Commission puts on UCSB, 25000 students Max by 2025, the acceptance rate is only going to fall over the next 15 years. The quality of students is going to improve as it has been for the past decade and the departments are going to get better.

At the end of the day, UCSB has a better under-grad and graduate engineering school than UCI.
UCSB (35) vs. UCI (51)

Are you sure about that amby? The thing that I’m looking at says UCI (34) and UCSB (41) for mechanical engineering, but it might be old.

^UCSB’s engineering school is rank 19 while UCI is rank 51. I don’t know where you pulled those numbers from Tommy.

Shiomi
UCI is not 51 in engineering. I dont know where you got that.
[University of California, Irvine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](University of California, Irvine - Wikipedia)

and this is the list I was referring to.
[NRC Rankings in Mechanical Eng](http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_rankings/area26.html)

^

think he is using USNWR’s engineering rankings…

UCSB - 19
UCI - 37

Hmm, my bad then. I guess I mixed up UCI’s engineering ranking with something else.

But the numbers still support that UCSB is superior to engineering that UCI.
UCI
USWNR - 37
ARWU Engineering & CS - 41

UCSB
USWNR - 19
ARWU Engineering & CS - 13

No?

And in fact, ARWU rankings place UCSB several places higher than UCI in its national and world rankings.

UCI
ARWU World 45th
ARWU National 36th

UCSB
ARWU World 36th
ARWU National 27th

!!! Now we all are speaking the mechanical vs.electrical engineering, not just overall comparison of colleges with various majors, specializations :)))
Yes, it make sence to enroll to UCSB for electrical engineering, and to UC Irvine to medical school or to what ever school is better :))) GPA and admission rates are not the only what matters:)

UCI is not 51 in engineering. I dont know where you got that.

Sure is. 51 in undergraduate engineering. UCSB is 35:

lol rc251 - try citing a source thats not a post on collegeconfidential

That post was made by UCBChemEGrad, a very respected person on this forum. The reason I’m using CC is because US News only publishes the first 10 colleges on the website and you have to buy the rest to see the scores.

[Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/spec-doct-engineering)

You can see the scores of the first 10 match. By the way, what is it that you find so unbelievable about those rankings?

I’m not going to buy the book or whatever it is, all I know is that that post is from 2008, and the link that you posted is the Best Colleges 2009, so I would assume the rankings are different. I have not seen anything that wasnt a post on this website that stats that UC Irvine is ranked 51st in engineering. Wikipedia says that USNWR ranks the program 37th. AT LEAST the article entries on wikipedia are monitored for correctness.

The US News rankings for 2009 were released in August of 2008, and US News always releases the rankings before the year they rank. So the rankings are not different.

As for Wikipedia, I’m sure you’ve been in many research classes where you are explicitly told to not use Wikipedia as a source  But to answer your question, if you follow the cite link on Wikipedia, you can clear see that the 37 refers to the graduate engineering ranking, while I posted the undergraduate ranking. By the way, in the graduate ranking, UCSB ranks #19. You can see those rankings [url=http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/eng/search/]here[/url].

HAHHAH… citing wikipedia and using it as a reliable source… comical…

citing a post on CC is even weirder…

Here’s the ranking from 2008 I believe, hosted on Cal Poly Pomona’s website:

http://polycentric.csupomona.edu/campus_news/usnews_engineering14th.pdf

Whether you want to believe the post on CC or not, it’s pretty clear either way that UCSB has a stronger undergraduate engineering program.

Here, I will provide you with the most well-informed answer:

No.

Source: Me

Lololololol

^ lol.

No from me too.

Source: imgoing2college

People who will read this thread 5 years from now will think this is a joke. Let it go ppl. There is no way UCSB is stagnating. It isn’t going to because “I” as part of its student body will not let it stagnate. I know the rest of the Gauchos agree to that.

Remember freshmen, “Leadership, Scholarship, and Citizenship”. Gauchos!!!

“And yawn, my personal anecdotal theory is that happy students do better in school. I can’t really see anyone being unhappy at SB”

Exactly. Go where you’re happy. Don’t choose a school based on rankings. Seriously, your Bachelor’s Degree gets you your FIRST job. After that, it’s up to you.

My dad : UCLA graduate, attended USC law school …income for 08: 39,000
My dad’s friend : Cal State LA graduate, Azusa Pacific for grad school…rough income for 08 (I don’t see his tax returns) : 95,000

There are UC Berkeley alumni that are jobless and there are Cal State Whatever alumni with great paying jobs.

GO WHERE YOU’LL BE HAPPY. ALL OF THE UCs ARE GOOD.

…for the record, I’m turning UCSD and UCSB down for UCSC.
