Since may 20, we already got two e-mails about an attempted rape and an attempted kidnap. Is UCSD usually that dangerous of a place?
I heard last year there was a lady and some burning car too

These things are rare and can happen on any college campus. I remember a similar incident that occurred my freshman year and that’s about it… definitely exercise caution when walking on campus at night - don’t walk alone, if necessary make use of the CSO escort service.

is it dangerous to walk down the street late at night by yourself?

UCSD is an open campus, not like UCSC if you’ve ever been there. That means anyone can come onto campus and do whatever the hell they want whenever they want. There are not nearly enough late night CSO/RSO’s roaming around to cover everything. The escort services exist for a reason, people should make use of them more. Never walk alone, try to be on the phone with someone if you are walking back late at night and/or carry pepper-spray.

La Jolla is generally a pretty safe place, maybe the fact that its a college campus with attractive girls lures the creepers in. But be safe and use your head, look around / behind you when walking, it pays to be vigilant.

Actually… I’ve read it’s worse to be on the phone with someone if you’re walking alone. Because then you only have one hand free to fend off an attacker, and also you’re more distracted - focusing on your conversation and not on your surroundings. Just my 2 cents.

But no one would attack you if youre on the phone cuz whoever is on the phone can do something about it and call the police.

^ absolutely not true.

the phone can be a motivation for attack (robbery, high value of reselling smartphones), a distraction like ucsandiego915 suggested, and you may have an audio witness, but do you really think you’d be able to update them with your actual location AND have the police respond in a timely manner? no way. it can take less than a minute for someone to beat you silly and make off with all your stuff.

I still want to maintain that UCSD is very safe in general, but things like this unfortunately can happen. It certainly is scary. The most important thing is to be smart. I think people should definitely take advantage of the CSO escort service.
