I have a friend who lives in-state. He has 3.6/4.6 gpa
800m/630cr/600w
not too many comm service hours, top 30%
He needs a lot of merit aid? can he get it? how?
thanks

UF doesn’t give merit aid to freshman as far as I know, except if you’re national merit

what are the requisites for national merit?

Typically a 212 or 213+ on the PSAT which you take your junior year.

That SAT score isn’t even high enough for honors college. UF has gotten stingy in regards to Merit scholarships. You would need a lot higher.

well, he needs aid. any advice?
He is good at math and goes to math tournaments frequently

he’ll get financial aid if he needs it, but if he’s looking for merit aid, he’s got to get outside scholarships. if he’s a good candidate that shouldn’t be an issue.

UF has some merit aid program. Most of their merit aid is targeted to lure high-achieving minorities.

no
they suck for merit aid

Basically merit aid is non-existent for incoming freshmen. Only thing I can think of is Lombardi Scholars. It’s really competitive though. In-state only, but they only gave out eight last year. Here is the site: [University of Florida Honors Program: John V. Lombardi Scholarship](http://www.honors.ufl.edu/lombardi/)

And a list of all scholarships available to incoming students (besides need based):
[University of Florida Scholarships for Incoming Students](http://www.honors.ufl.edu/incoming.html)

Lots of scholarships and opportunities once he gets here, though. If he takes initiative and applies for stuff offered through the school, he can get a lot of money if he’s a good student.
