I'm a rising senior (instate) and I've recently been becoming more and more interested in uf. A lot of my friends tell me it's a really good school and all, but just as many tell me it's WAY overrated... I know it's a really subjective topic, but can anyone else give a second opinion on this?

Is it overrated? Yes.

Is it still the best school in the state? Yes.

There is a reason UF is one of the top 20 public universities, and usually rated around top 50 overall.

I believe UF is a great school.

But, honestly, who cares what your friends say? Pick a school based on how it will fit you, not how others perceive it. I got my fair share of moments when my friends said UF was overrated, too. I’m an incoming freshmen and I feel like I made the right decision in choosing UF. It’s a well rounded school excelling both academically and socially.

don’t let someone say something that nebulous and have it sway you in any way. if you’re unsure about UF or any other school, get the facts. i never met anyone in high school who i would trust with determining if a college was ‘overrated’ or anything nonsensical like that. it literally doesn’t mean anything at all. if you want to know if something is really overrated, you have to get a LOT more specific than that.

UF is a good school. FSU is a good school. UCF is a good school. go to the school that draws you in the most. what you achieve there will be magnitudes more important than how its ‘rated’.

Over-rated is an opinion. Those who don’t think highly of UF will find it to be over-rated. It’s a great school, no doubt. I personally don’t find it to be over-rated.

Well, there are two ways in which I could understand someone calling UF overrated. One is from a student who prefers another Florida school, and the other is from a student who prefers a better, out-of-state school. People who are going to FSU, UCF or gag UM might want to put UF down for whatever reason, but academically it’s still the best school in the state.
HOWEVER, I’ve found that a lot of people overhype UF on the national scale. I mean, some presenter at orientation was like, “Congratulations on coming to the best school in the nation!” Hooray, yeah, whatever, but there’s kinda 52 other schools that are better than us. I feel like people in Florida only know UF and would have a rude awakening when they learn that UF isn’t that great. So then someone like me, who got into other out-of-state schools that are better than UF, would be like, “Yeah, it’s good for Florida and whatever, but it’s still just ranked 53rd.”

IS UF overrated? in my sons HS 18 students applied to UF. 4 where admitted, the other 14are going to either FSU or UCF. btw FSU admitted all of them UCF did not.

IS UF overrated? yes is rated over FSU, UCF, UGA, UAL, USoCar. In the south only UNC compares to UF when it comes to public univerities.

Is UF overrated? Consider that it is more than a school, it becomes a part of who you are when you graduate. When you leave UF you not only graduate from a great school you become a member of the Gator Nation. If you plan on staying in Florida the contacts and relationships that you develop not only while in school but also as an Alum are priceless.

Let me give you an example. I was working on a large project that was on bid basis. I knew the competition was fierce and it was not going to be easy to win the bid. The morning I dropped off the bid I noticed a lady parking her car with a gator plate on it. Later on during the meeting I noticed that she was a big player with this company. When we concluded the meeting. I went up to her and asked her about UF. She graduated a little later than I. We talked Football, Basketball, the MBA program and about how great it was being a Gator and living in gville.

Later that afternoon I received an email. Notifying me that I had won the contract. At the bottom of the email she signed it and enter the words GO GATORS!!!

Did I get the bid because we were both Gators? maybe not. But I can assure you that it did not hurt.

So quit questioning whether UF is underrated. If you were fortunate enough to be accepted? My advise is to count your blessings.

gator4ever…
4/18. Ok, that’s not bad. I bet it’s from the hype that UF gets. Everyone in Florida wants to go, so everyone applies. And I mean everyone. Even people who have no shot of getting in. If you do well in high school and actually try, you’ll probably get into UF. It’s not as hard as they make it out to be…

“In the south only UNC compares to UF when it comes to public univerities.” GEORGIA TECH, GOSH! YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN?

And in a UF pamphet somewhere it LITERALLY says, “Hispanic Business named UF’s College of Engineering 5th in the nation for engineering schools for Hispanic Students.” Only the “5th” was capitalized and bolded and yada yada. Seriously?!? That’s all jolly and good for hispanic engineers but my point is that making rankings more detailed is stupid. UF is one of the best PUBLIC schools in the SOUTHEAST, but there are plenty of other public schools around the nation that are better than it.

And there’s a connection with any other alum from your school. It just so happens that there are like looks at UF pamphlet 331,500 living alumni in the Gator Nation.

In my schools IB class, out of the 130 or so people that applied to UF, over 80% got in…

Is it overrated? It depends on the people you ask. Is it as selective as people make it out to be? No…

38% admittance, while it doesn’t compare to some of the elites, is still pretty selective.

I mean’t to say it’s not as selective when it comes to SAT/GPA/Extracurriculars

In my opinion I don’t think it’s as highly selective as the Ivies. Many who apply there don’t have outstanding stats. It’s more than just test scores, and ECs and maybe alumni relation that get you into UF.

Short answer: no
Long answer: yes

When people say it’s the “Harvard of the South” or something like it’s as selective as the Ivys or another completely ridiculous thing, yeah it’s overrated.

When people say it’s an okay school & anyone that applys gets in or it’s on equal terms as FSU, then no it’s not overrated but underrated.

I personally think it’s underrated by US News. A school with a 4.3 average GPA, average ACT of 30 & SAT of over 1300 should be at least top 50 but US News’ rating system kinda screws public schools (see: Berkley, UCLA, Michigan & UNC who should be rated better than they are).

It’s typically in the top 50, it was last year I believe. Moving around a few places each year doesn’t mean a whole lot though

Rankings in general, and those individuals that use them as a sole or primary qualifier of value, are overrated.
