Hey Everyone,

My plan is to major in Industrial Engineering and I am from Minnesota. I have been accepted to the University of Minnesota and UIUC. I applied to Madison late and havent gotten a response yet but I should be accepted I would hope so! I really really like UIUC but it is A LOT of money.. about 49,000 since im out of state, while UMN would be about 26,000 and Madison 29,000. These prices are all before scholarships. I guess I just really dont know if UIUC is worth it. I know there are great resources and the Engineering Program there is AMAZING..however Madison and UMN are both great universities and actually Madisons Industrial Program is ranked higher than UIUCs. What does everyone think? UIUC worth it? or go to another university?

Thanks a lot!!

No, it’s not. Go to a University where you will be successful and graduate with the least amount of debt.

Yes, Yes it is. You can listen to people who will tell you ‘oh it’s all the same no matter where you go to school.’ If that was true then everyone would go to community college and local small state school. If you want to work for the best, you should go to an institute that is the best. I’m from Pennsylvania and choose UIUC over Penn State for civil engineering. Why? It’s the best. If you love UIUC come here.

In this case for you U of I would not be worth it. It is my first choice and a wonderful school but I am in state. To pay a lot of money for a undergraduate school not very smart considering that you got into minn and madison.

Check out if you are eligible to the Mid-west Student Exchange Program.

Research the names of companies that visit Minn. to recruit engineers. You may discover that many of the same companies that visit UIUC also visit Minn. In that case, there is not much point in paying a huge differential, unless you are at the tippy top of top students.
