So I've made the decision to stay in state, so I'm probably going to apply to UMCP, UMBC, Towson, and Salisbury.

UMCP would be ideal if they had the major I'm interested in (communications and media studies), but they don't.

As a result, I have to look at the other state colleges more seriously

Towson seems fine, except apperently has more girls than guys (which is not a plus for me, since I'm a girl)

Salisbury is on the eastern shore, not really my type of crowd there, also apperently too much of a party school.

UMBC seems ideal for me because they have communcations, its in state, guy girl ratio is good.

However, I've been reading some negative things about UMBC, such as that it has an "ugly" campus, no party scene, and that most people are commuters, which makes me not want to have UMBC as my top choice, so I'm currently at a loss.

I'd appreciate answers from people that have been to any of these universities, and the pros and cons of each (that I may not have stated).

I’ve been to both UMCP and UMBC and I would have to say that both of the campuses are equally ugly. Not hideous though, but just not very attractive. UMD seems to have perpetual construction going on while UMBC is just… not very campusy. If I had to choose, I would have to pick UMD though because it has more green area.

If the party scene is a HUGE deal to you, then UMBC probably isn’t the best idea. Yes there are ALOT of commuters and campus is generally boring, but if you want to party only monthly, or bi-monthly, then it shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

UMD has a pretty awesome party scene though and lots of different people from different places.

If you’re in search of a social life, UMBC may not be the best place. If you’re in search of a good degree from a rising college, then UMBC easily beats the others (except UMCP of course). Which is more important?

well, from talking to a girl that just finished her freshman year at umbc, although there’s not a large party scene, she said that there are parties, you just have to know where to find them.

but socially umbc isn’t good?

i’m just looking for a good combination of the major i’m interested in (comm) and cool people/events.
um

i’ve talked to a lot of students at umbc who are generally happy with their education; for a social scene, everyone heads out to college park and other areas for a good time. keep in mind though, umbc is considered a “commuter” college, since a lot of the people who go there are from the area. however, umbc is great in terms of education, and is ranked as a number 1 “up-and-coming” school. also, a lot of the guys who go there are really hot ;)

Just some advice, Towson is a beautiful campus better social scene, but easy going. Has the best communications program of the four you listed, best instate for film. UMBC has interactive game and design but no film program so what kind of communications major are you? Acting, production, TV, film? All and more are available at Towson.
