IS UMICH a diverse and friendly atmosphere?

being an Asian would i fit into the community?

YES, DEFINITELY....so many Asians on campus. I will say it again, so many Asians on campus

Michigan has about 5,000 Asian students, between the undergrads and the graduate students. Besides, Ann Arbor is a liberal town, racial diversity is generally quite welcome.

Ann Arbor is such a nice change from west michigan, where I live, where the racial diversity is practically zero unless you go "inner city."

a lot of F*B's though...:-/

not that i'm racist against my own race but i'm not used to random chinese ppl talking to me in chinese assuming that i'm international or moved to the US 8 months ago or w/e lol

Lots of Asians, especially Chinese. Next is Korean. I don't know too many Japanese people here.

michigan is very diverse and liberal.

It's big enough that no matter who you identify with you'll be able to find a happy little niche to fit in.
Plenty of asians, everyone I know here in Michigan who's applying Ivy has UMich as their only safety.

PhatAlbert, where are you from?

i have a question. This summer i attended a program at Umich and i felt that there were a lot of black people there. Is this actually true or r just the people who do the bridge program(take classes from the summer) overwhelmingly black. No bias here. Just curious

Actually, as a whole, I would say the University of Michigan does not have enough African Americans. I think only 8% of Michigan students are African American.

UofM has students from 50 states and 117 foreign countries. according to princeton review, this is the michigan student body:

Enrollment: 24,677
Female: 51%
Out of State: 31%
International: 5%
African American: 8%
Asian: 12%
Caucasian: 64%
Hispanic: 5%
Native American: 1%

here's berkeley:

Enrollment: 22,880
Female: 54%
Out of State: 11%
International: 3%
African American: 4%
Asian: 41%
Caucasian: 31%
Hispanic: 11%
Native American: 1%

Those numbers are explained by the fact that Berkeley can't use affirmative action and it is hamstrung by in-state quotas.

...but then again Michigan loses a lot of its diversity after the first year (especially among under-recruited groups). UM has the highest minority drop out rate of the USNWR top 50.

On the friendly half of the question... Everybody that I hang out with here is almost overly friendly (which is really nice). Plus, I run into people that I know all the time on campus so I'm hardly ever actually lonely. It's a big place, but you make it smaller.

why do people drop out of michigan after 1st year???

Well, not many people drop out of Michigan at all. 96% return for Sophomore year and close to 90% graduate eventually. But the reason people drop out is either financial or academic intensity.

Be in the RC..its as diversity friendly as it get.

If your on the Hill or North Campus.....who knows!?

KB, Michigan is diversity friendly, no matter the dorm. I have never heard of racial tensions on campus.

Alexandre, you must have been here before the days of BAMN. They have racial agitator extraordinaire Al Sharpton speaking on the steps of the grad library this week.

ugh...

Forgive my ignorance, but what is BAMN?
