I have been accepted into the art programs at USC and UMich. Which program is more prestigious or will better train me for jobs after graduation? I may decide at some point to not major in art, so which school would be better for me if that situation should come up?
Both schools are giving me a good financial aid package, so cost is not a factor. Please help me decide!

They are both excellent schools. Go to the school that you like most rather than worrying about prestige. What appealed to you about each school enough that you decided to apply?

FiveO,
Have you visited both campuses? Did one or the other stand out to you? Would the climate be a factor? It is the last night to decide. Have you done any research about the universities?

There are so many aspects of selecting a college prestige should only be one of many things to consider.

Recently on this board have been many threads about the differences between Michigan and USC. Use the search function to read these.

According to the latest U.S. News & World Report issue on colleges:

generally the answer yes. but depends where you are

US news ranks USC higher than UMich. Umich is also easier to get into with its like 40% acceptance rate. I’d only choose Umich over USC if I get admitted to Ross - Michigans business is better than USC’s

They’re both great schools. Which one do you prefer? Do you have a sense of which one is the better fit, which campus atmosphere appeals to you more? Will getting home to visit be more of a financial challenge at one than the other? Will your FA apply to study abroad at both schools? Will your AP’s apply more at one than the other, and does this matter to you? Would you prefer a smaller but vibrant college town or a large city environment? Have you looked at the gen ed requirements at both schools and does one suit your needs better than the other? IMHO, there isn’t a bad choice here and both schools are very well-respected.

happybuddha USC is ONE rank higher than UMich. plus everyone knows US News favors private unis more. UMich’s endowment is 3 times that of USC no joke. if they decide to turn private they would rise to at least 20 or higher (they are considering since they have so much money)

US News Rankings tend to put public schools at a disadvantage. They are generally both considered very prestigious schools. Rankings and acceptance rates will not help you gauge which college is right for you (nor determine how prestigious a college is). If it is feasible, visit both schools before making a decision.

In my opinion, USC is more prestigious on the West Coast but Michigan tops USC everywhere else in the country.

NorCal,
What evidence do you have for this sweeping statement?

i agree with norcal. theres no shame in admitting that usc has flaws…it really isnt a “sweeping” statement.

[World’s Best Universities: Top 400 - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-universities/2010/02/25/worlds-best-universities-top-400.html)

mich - 20ish i think?
usc - 100ish?

it was hard for me to pick usc over umich, but i definitely dont regret it

Yeah, I have to agree that the general perception is that UMich is more “prestigious” than USC everywhere other than the west coast, and maybe Hawaii. Well in the US anyways. No real data to support that, but coming from NJ, that seems to be the general consensus. Now that’s not to say it’s by any means any better (look at the things Georgia Girl posted if you want to debate that), but this is strictly from a names perspective. However, things are definitely picking up for USC, and when I applied, people were starting to consider USC close to Duke’s level at my school, so that shows you that USC is definitely making strides in making a name for itself. Anyways, anyone who needs to know how good a school is (ie. grad school admissions, employers, etc) will recognize that both UMich and USC are great schools.

As others have said, choose the school that seems like a better fit for you personally. The difference between UMich and USC in terms of names are minimal.

eivita

smart not to include the USNews rankings (national universities) where Umich is behind USC!!

You picked a list that highly ranks UMich — even over BROWN!

UMich is also 3 spots behind Stanford in those rankings. Do you think there that close? And that UMich should be higher than Carnegie Mellon? Anyone can make the argument that USC is a better school, it all depends on your career path.

Dudes the top 400 world uni thing is screwed up there are a bunch of random chinese colleges, cornell is higher than stanford etc.

It’s the INTERNATIONAL rankings. They are going to be a lot different than the American rankings because it emphasizes different qualities in a university.

Seems strange that Michigan is more prestigious internationally considering USC enrolls more international students than any other college in the nation.

^Maybe that’s why Michigan is considered more prestigious, because it offers fewer spots to international students. USC could be considered a sort of “safety school” for international students.

i dont understand why some of you are getting so defensive over this. nowhere in my post am i saying usc is an inferior school…i even opted to go to usc over umich.

im just saying every ranking is different, and you cant go by stats alone. the person who started the thread asked if it was more prestigious, and on some levels, its clear that UMich is.

usc is ranked ONE spot higher on us world news lmu, calm down, im not out to spite you. im just saying when it comes to other evaluations umich has it beat.

and no, that list is not “messed up” simply because you disagree with it.
its an international ranking based on more than how well a school can crunch numbers.

to the person who started the thread: you cant go wrong with either school, i had to visit umich and usc both to make a final decision. they’re both great, on certain levels usc is more “prestigious” than mich, on others umich has usc topped. either one is an awesome choice

to the rest of you - its okay to admit usc isnt the “best” school in the world. get over it

chillax man, I just think that Umich is a tad overrated.
