Okay, I am not defending DukeAlumnus2003 but I am defending Duke. If someone cannot afford Duke, Duke always pays for them. People who make less than 60,000 actually get so much financial aid that they go for free. My package was quite large, as well.

Why do Dukies and UNC people hate each other so much? It really is annoying. I am going to Duke but have so many friends going to UNC too and I plan to visit both campuses a ton.

And to the OP: Yes, UNC is a top university. It is number 30 in the nation, which is very respectable for a public university.

To DukeAlumnus: A university doesn’t have to be in the top10 to be good. Cornell, Hopkins, Georgetown, and other schools are great too. Heck, half the ivies aren’t in the top 10 and most of them are great.

To UNC bashers of Duke: Please stop. It makes me mad and DukeAlumnus is just a pretentious jerk who is totally unrepresentative of all the people I have met at Duke so far.

Nice to see an honest Dookie, Helicio. It is good to have a mutual respect for each other.

That said, I also tend to like people like DukeAlumn2003, mainly because the great rivalry that our schools have wouldn’t exist if there weren’t *******s on both sides to stir the pot.

They really are both great schools. At the same time, people from both schools can be pretentious and I understand that. My brother is going to NC State and it really bothers him when someone from Duke or UNC tells him that State is not as good or not as prestigious.

I am not into basketball though, so maybe that is one reason why I don’t hate UNC wit ha passion, ha!

Yeah, but anyway DukeAlumnus2003 is really a jerk and just ignore him. I have cousins in Lebanon and they have heard of both Duke and UNC.

Oh and by the way, I have friends that go to Duke. I know some great people that go there, as well as some not so great. Same with UNC. There are jerks and there are amazing people at both schools. And Duke is a great school, obviously. Even if I do hate their basketball team with a fiery passion. ;)

I wasn’t trying to bash Duke in my post, just trying to defend UNC.

Not necessarily. If you make a certain amount then you don’t get any help and that doesn’t make duke inexpensive. I get zero financial aid but 50k a year is stil a hell of a lot of money to pay for college.

Yeah I also wanna make sure that I use cash. I know way to many people who use a debit card and don’t realize how much money they are spending in college!

UNC is a good school, it is regarded as one of the best public schools along with University of Michigan and University of California-Berkley and LA

Sorry if I’m wrong, but while UNC definitely has very strong programs in the humanities and social sciences, aren’t its engineering and science programs a bit weaker? Is this a (or maybe the) reason it’s ranked a little below UC-B and UMich?

I’m from the Midwest, and all the things I’ve heard there about UNC were very positive. I’ve met several people who considered UNC on par with UC-B, and UC-B is widely acknowledged as the best public school in the country. Many of my friends applied to UNC too (though that may have more to do with UNC’s athletic reputation…they’re all basketball freaks).

UNC doesn’t have strong engineering programs; NC State University, located 30 miles east of UNC, is the state’s engineering school. UNC’s science programs are top-notch, however, particularly its programs associated with medicine and “pre-med” majors.

Pretty sure that US News and World Report ranked UNC-CH fifth in terms of public schools and national universities…That says a lot…
best value and a top public school. sounds pretty rad to me.

UNC is the perfect combination of academics, diversity, and athletics…
As big as the student body is, the campus still feels small.

Few towns compare to Chapel Hill and I’ve visited a ton. I pulled my apps out of countless schools (including top colleges and universities) after getting into UNC OOS. Sure, Duke is gorgeous but nothing beats Chapel Hill.

Coming from a Duke student: if you’d pay in-state tuition at UNC, but full tuition (no fin. aid) at Duke, UNC is IMO a much better deal (assuming $200K means anything at all to you/your parents). If you can get into both, you’ll probably be just as successful no matter where you go.

Also, after reading back a little further in this thread, I just want to second Helicio’s posts: DukeAlumnus2003 is NOT representative of the majority of Duke. Actually, Duke students don’t typically look down upon UNC as an academic institution, at least as much as their athletic rivalry would seem to suggest. We North Carolinians have grown up in the midst of this rivalry. While 85% of UNC is from in-state, Duke’s majority is from OOS, and as a result, I feel as though UNC’s hatred for Duke surpasses Duke’s hatred for UNC, by far.

This is a ridiculous thread. UNC is ranked 30 in the country by USNews, which means that they believe that only 29 universities are better than UNC. Rankings aside, UNC is very well thought of throughout the country. To answer the question, YES it is a top university. THE TOP? no. But in the top 5% in the country? Yes.

“Duke is number 8 in the nation; there’s not much more room above it, and it is ranked better than HALF the ivies.”

This is what the USNEWS Magazine says, however, no one in their right mind actually believes that Duke is on par with academic powerhouses like Columbia and the University of Chicago or 10+ spots above Berkeley. Public schools like UC Berkeley (which is a world-renowned university in disciplines accross the board) and to a lesser extent, UVA, UNC-Chapel Hill and University of Michigan get shafted in the rankings by virtue of being public and less rich. Don’t get me wrong, Duke is a very good school, but it’s wayyyyyy overrated.
