I'm sorry if I'm being blunt but I'm an international student and I'll be really far away from everything I've known for the past 18 years and I don't think I could handle racism from the school I have my heart set on.
This racism thing was brought on by the reviews by UNC students and they were so angry about the racist vibe on campus and so would I...in fact I think I would like start up a whole ruckus at the first racist actions.
And also, they were all going on about how UVA is a MUCH MUCH better university because it has better profs. Yeah, the UNC students seemed to really hate the profs coz they were so self-obsessed.
Can someone please clear up these things for me? Are what these students saying true?

I'm not really sure where you're getting your information from, but I've never gotten the feeling that UNC is racist, and I'm VERY happy with the professors here. I'm really not trying to rag on UVA here because I think the two schools are similar, but UVA is the school with the reputation of being snobby. I hope that statement doesn't get me in trouble.

UNC isn't really racist...at all. And I love my profs.

Hmm...try studentreview where all the UNC students are ripping their school apart.
Anyone else?

UNC is not a racist institution. On the other hand, it embraces diversity with a passion.

The University of North Carolina is an institution located in the southeastern United States, a region of the country which has historically struggled with issues pertaining to race. At ANY university, you will find people with opinions that differ from yours, who have beliefs which will most likely make you feel uncomfortable. I feel that I could not honestly say that UNC, as such a large and diverse campus, is one-hundred percent free of students who are less than tolerant of any other racial, ethnic, cultural (and etc.) group.

With that said, I have yet to meet anyone I would consider racist, or even seen racist behavior. The Campus Y, which is the campus' center for social justice, is a tremendously involved organization, and if you were to attend, you would most likely feel right at home there... even though I am not an active member of Campus Y, every event hosted by them that I have attended has been very successful and a very positive experience. The University's Department of Multicultural Affairs (I believe that is the right term) is led by some incredible people, and I have friends who are involved in issues as varied as migrant workers' rights to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender office... please don't worry about tolerance at UNC. There is a place for everybody, and I assure you that we will do everything we can to make you feel at home.

Now, with regards to other complaints about professors and negative reviews... keep in mind that people with bad attitudes tend to be much more vocal than those who are happiest. Of the few people who I know that raise complaints, they are usually the least involved on campus, rarely look to the brighter side of issues, and have other problems going on in their social lives that have little to do with the university.

I have friends who turned down great schools to come here, another who transferred from UVA to UNC, and many, like me, who felt the connection instantly. There's no need to worry.

Judging by the Franklin Street celebration on election night, I'd say no.

hithink, your tone is ridiculous. Here we are, UNC students, who have other things to do, but every so often volunteer a little bit of time just to give you a feel of what campus is like... and you come at us essentially accusing us of lying.

If you're going to base your opinion of an institution off of a website, I don't want you to come here anyway.

I know this is harsh, but geez high school seniors can be so full of it.

The short answer: No.

hithink,
To be blunt, when I first saw your post I thought it was a joke. I decided to go to that site you mentioned, and as far as I could tell, only 106 people from UNC had reviewed the school on that site. To put that into perspective, there are 16,000+ undergrads at UNC right now. Anyway, I didn't look very hard, but I couldn't find any mention of those racist comments that you alluded to. Are there people at UNC that are racist? More than likely. Will there be racist people at any university you apply to in this country? Almost certainly. However, I haven't felt that people here are racist, overtly or covertly. I think whatever comments you read were probably the result of the elections on Tuesday. I know I found out I didn't know some of my friends as well as I though I did, that's for sure.

NOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
UNC is NOT racist and I love my profs!
I'm sure there are some people who are racist, but that's at practically every university, everywhere you go. you'll fit in just fine. I'll be your friend :) hahaha

ok in all honesty, uva is DEFINITELY the more racist school. it's wealthier and more conservative. UNC is very, very liberal. in fact, it's basically because of UNC students that Obama won north carolina. there was overwhelming support for him on campus.

and the professors here are amazing. of my five classes, i absolutely love three of them and like the other two (they don't really like me though...haha). but they're all so smart and amazing teachers!

^^yeah, if you're making your decision based on which school is less accepting of diversity, i'd advise you NOT to go to UVA--it's more conservative than carolina.

also, maybe the people who wrote that they didn't like their professors were first- or second-year students who were still taking larger lecture courses. it's hard to get to know your instructor in big classes like that, but once you get to upper-level, smaller major classes, you'll make some great connections with your professors. i've never been totally adoring of my huge lecture profs, but i've really respected the professors who teach classes in my majors. i'd assume this would be the same way at UVA since the schools are both large state schools.

The racist accusations about my school are just ridiculous so I'm not even going to comment on them other than saying that this campus is one of the most diverse and accepting in the nation. If you're going to base your ideas of a school on some silly website which allows anyone to post comments about a school you are going to think what you want anyways.

As to professors here: my first semester here I'm taking a course from a professor with one of the most impressive academic pedigrees I've ever seen (Phillips-Exeter, Harvard A.b, A.M., Ph.D) who is also one of the most well-known scholars in his field. He is incredibly approachable and an amazing lecturer, the class only has 25-30 students as well. It's pretty amazing the amount of prominent professors you can take courses from.

Now, not all of your professors are going to be like that, nor should they be, but the difference in the professors at UVA over UNC is going to be minimal. Although UVa is thought to be superior academically by many, there isn't THAT much of a difference in the schools.

who thinks UVA is superior academically?
certainly none of the ranking systems.

most people.

UVa is consistently ranked higher than UNC in pretty much every major ranking publication. Just how significant the difference is is likely minimal but lets be real here for a minute.

UNC is not racist, but u will def. find racist people, as you will find anywhere

UNC does have a lot of wealthy caucasians that stick to their own (ie frats)
but I feel like minorities tend to cling to their own group as well.

its like anywhere else, as far as embracing diversity...I dunno, it seems about the same as you would expect at any liberal university. nothing too significantly different.

UNC is far from racist. in fact, it's pretty liberal. it breaks the mold of stereotypical southern schools.
you may find some people who are pretty "close minded" if you will, but i wouldn't call them racist necessarily.

You'll find those at any school though, happyface.

to say obama won nc bc of unc is an absolutely assanine statement
