All my grad applications have a section for work experience. Should I list out undergraduate research in that section. Its not really a job since I wasn't payed, but it is work.

This is for an engineering PhD application.

i have 1 year of undergrad research experience for which i was paid. it wasn't very involved research. I put it under employment experience.

i have 2 more years of very involved research experience for which i wasnt paid. I didn't put it there.

i think paid research positions can be considered work experiences.

other question: does fellowship at an undergraduate level (either research or teaching) count as a work experience? indeed, it is my main source of income and i spent 15 hrs a week working (developing curriculum and teaching) for the fellowship.

I agree with noface, I put paid "research assistantships" under work experience. Other unpaid research (stipends don't count, lol) either fell under the "education" category or I didn't put it on the CV.

i think stipends count-- you are getting paid for the work you do. I think anything you get paid for counts as work experience
