Is University of New Mexico a good school

Hi, I just applied and got accepted to University of New Mexico. Is it a good school? What is the environment like? Is Albuquerque a good place to be? I am socially liberal. Will I fit in?

Congrats on your acceptance! UNM is a fine school, it’s comparable to several of the California State universities (Sacramento, Fullerton, …), Georgia State University, University of Houston, Florida Atlantic University, etc. If possible, try to visit the school.

Good Luck!

Thank you very much!!! I am planning on visiting in October.

It’s an okay school from what I’ve read about it. Congratulations on the acceptance!

Thank you!!! The main reason why I applied is because I qualified for the amigo scholarship, and I am able to get in state tuition.

Nice–congrats!

Good plan.

Longtime ABQ resident here.

Generally speaking New Mexico is socially liberal especially in the ABQ-Santa Fe area, with progressive attitudes toward same sex marriage (one of the first states to legalize it), LGBT issues, abortion/reproductive rights, medical marijuana and other hot button social issues.

UNM has its issues like all big state Us do, but I think you’ll find that the campus and students are generally pretty progressive. UNM has a diverse student population. (Latino/Hispanic, Native American and a significant number of non-traditional [older] students).

UNM is an urban campus, and ABQ, like all mid-sized cities, has some not so good areas–though none of them are anywhere near campus. Campustown (south and east of campus along Central Ave) has some nice options for shopping, dining and entertainments in a range of prices–from very expensive to very inexpensive. Lots of outdoor activities nearby-skiing, rock & ice climbing, hiking, white water rafting.

Campus parking is terrible, but the campus shuttle system is decent. Public transit in ABQ leaves a lot to be desired, but UNM students can ride the buses for free.

If you have specific questions about UNM or ABQ–PM me.

UNM has its strengths & weaknesses, but it will get you where you want to go in most cases. Art, architecture, anthropology/NewWorld archaeology, business, digital arts/film-making, evolutionary bio, geology & nursing are all strong programs. Engineering is ABET accredited with ties to Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs.

WayOutWestMom Thank you very much for all of the info. I have really considered New Mexico after reading this. I will be visiting there in 2 months. Will definetly message you if I need help. Thanks!!!
